Ah religion, you old ****got. I wonder what Christianity would've been like if the people writing it had been gay, like totally with robes in all the colours of the rainbow? I bet the crusade would've been a lot funnier at least.
I dunno about funnier, but it would have definately been more FABULOUS!

Romantic love doesn't even exist until six to five hundred years ago in the west, though eastern cultures have used it in literature for thousands of years.

Actually, the bible doesn't even acknowledge the existence of romantic love.

Thats because before then, the west had a little something called the "dark ages". No one wrote anything down because they were busy trying not to die.

If your an atheist, the natural order has no relevance.
That's incorrect. Atheists do not believe in the divine. Being an atheist has no bearing on whether you believe in a natural order, or if you believe a natural order has relevance.
I know several atheists who are involved in the green movement, and attempt to minimize their impact on the planet and that of other human beings. They see a large number of human activities as having a negatively affecting the natural order, which is something relevant to them.
Then again, most atheists I know don’t consider same-sex attraction unnatural or against the natural order.
I support intelligent conservation of the environment, for each decision we must consider the impact for seven generations. However, we should not use Government as a lever to effect such change. Control like that inevitably leads to a backlash.
I don't really have a problem with defective individuals, I'll even give them a Darwin Award for removing themselves from the gene pool, but I get irritable when it's a everpresent phenomena in the media.
Like in Dragon Age...Zevran could have been a cool character if not tainted. On subsequent playthroughs I took it upon myself to kill him immediately after his ambush of our party.

So when Catullus writes those love poems in ancient Rome he was in the East?
And the Bible was written in the West now? I suppose by that logic the Quran is also a western book.

No, people are talking about applying social Darwinism to their lives.
Social Darwinism is applying the rules of evolution to a sapient society, which doesn't work because survival of the fittest doesn't apply to us.

He does have a point. Pre-medieval cultures in the west talked about romantic love quite a bit.
"Frankly I wish I were dead
When she left, she wept
a great deal; she said to me, "This parting must be
endured, Sappho. I go unwillingly."
I said, "Go, and be happy
but remember (you know
well) whom you leave shackled by love
"If you forget me, think
of our gifts to Aphrodite
and all the loveliness that we shared
"all the violet tiaras,
braided rosebuds, dill and
crocus twined around your young neck
"myrrh poured on your head
and on soft mats girls with
all that they most wished for beside them
"while no voices chanted
choruses without ours,
no woodlot bloomed in spring without song..."
Sounds pretty romantic to me. lol.

A key aspect of romantic love is the reciprocation of love among both parties.
Not just a guy lusting over a girl.

Yeah, the original topic has been talked about, not much more to say. I still stand by my the idea that romanceable characters sexualities should be ambiguous, but thats just me.

True, but even today as a sapient species we still have a lot of traits from our ancestors. We are sapient, but we origin from an animal. Survival of the fittest in it's purest form doesn't apply to us anymore, but we still have many animal traits in our behavior without realizing it.

Also known as "genetic memory". Yes, the "study" exists. Google it if you like
