Yeah, the original topic has been talked about, not much more to say. I still stand by my the idea that romanceable characters sexualities should be ambiguous, but thats just me.

I have been semi converted on this topic..As long as Tali doesnt change and they change Liara back to her normal nice self in the process

I would be happy with ME3 is Liara either becomes a squadmate again, or plays a larger, more integral role. Also, I want to smooch her more dammit

Yes it does, just in different ways, where intellect, empathy, communication skills, social skills etc are valued more.

That's meritocracy, not survival.
We as a society care for those who can't survive on their own due to empathy and morality, natural selection would see such people die.

Actually, the bible doesn't even acknowledge the existence of romantic love.

Romantic love doesn't even exist until six to five hundred years ago in the west, though eastern cultures have used it in literature for thousands of years.

Would you please, PLEASE stop saying idiotic things? This is like your third post in a row where you excrete complete and utter nonsense like some mentally handicapped baboon.

The history of western literature is literally littered with examples of romantic love. Medieval literature, Greek literature - and yes, the bible, too.

For proof, pop open a nearby bible and look for the Song of Songs. Or better yet, just look here:
http://www.fourmilab...of_Solomon.html

That's not to mention Egyptian love poetry, Sumerian erotic verses, etc.

Devil's Advocate. :P  No, I don't think anyone that subscribes to a religious philosophy should be able to pick and choose.  They should have to follow *all* of the rules if they want to claim they follow it.  Hence the comment about religion being full of hypocrasy.

It came down to Miranda's character for me. She simply isn't a lesbian. Sure, that can always change but I see that as deliberate pandering/fanservice if they "patch" it in ME2. Who knows, maybe she'll try swinging that way in ME3. ^_^

Plus, modders have already taken care of that situation. Yay for the modders!

Not true, you clearly don't understand how a social mammal behaves in nature.
Trust me, a chimp DOES care if he/she sees another chimp suffering, just to give an example.
All the great apes are capable of showing empathy and act towards a moral code that's not so different form ours.

We are not so different from other social mammals, we're just furter evolved, that's all.

You arent the only one, I know a lot of people didnt like her.

But for the people who romanced her in ME1 and stayed faithful to her through ME2, I really REALLY hope it pays off in ME3.

I was afraid of generalizing, so I went into specifics.   The main component of what lets humans survive is adaptibility.    Thats the main component of what lets any speciies survive.

If their is a plague, the humans with traits best at surviving that plague will surivive.    That is adaptibility.    The specific traits in question may be intellect (to figure out whats causing the plague), deviancy (thinking with everyone else may be the best thing here, if its right, or going your own way and being a deviant may be, because the mainstream is wrong), communication/social (organizing a effective strategy at counteracting plague), sheer resilience, or just a immunity.

All those things encompass adaptibility.

There is nothing new about the idea of romantic love.

What is relatively new is having it be the primary reason you get married. That is not to say alot of people were not extremely happily married, but generally marriages were about family connections and economics and such rather than who you happened to love. I remember it was so unusual how much the Roman Pompey the Great loved his wife Julia, he actually got made fun of publicly about it.

Nothing against her though.  Liara is my bud.

No, people are talking about applying social Darwinism to their lives.
Social Darwinism is applying the rules of evolution to a sapient society, which doesn't work because survival of the fittest doesn't apply to us.

*laughs* natural selection is very hard to keep down. I would call it "success and proliferation of the fittest" now, rather than survival of the fittest.

But some politicians are striving to remove it's refining influence from our society altogether...dragging us all down into mediocrity and stagnation.

Well, I know people also didnt like the fact that her character seemed to change so much from ME1 to ME2, and I actually liked that she changed and am excited to get to talk to her more in ME3.

And where did I say other animals weren't capable of basic society?
The point is when you move into society you have gone beyond pure survival of the fittest. Evolution and nature aren't rules set in stones, they're reactions to enviroment. If those reactions eventually evolve social animals then survival of the fittest becomes a lesser factor.

Cutlass Jack wrote...

I disagree. Sexual preference is a part of the definition, but not the defining part of the definition. At least insofar as what we learn about our squadmates during the course of the game. Not one character we meet in game ever defines themselves as a 'hetrosexual.' Not one.

They don't need to definte themselves as such. However, the results of their sexual orientation are rather obvious -- despite your character being otherwise the same person, you can only pursue certain route if your gender happens to match the character's sexual orientation. In other words, whether or not you are compatible with the orientation of a person, has large influence on what sort of relationship you can form with them, and that in turn influences how they treat you and how much they trust you.

You mentioned Jack for example -- now consider how as it is right now, only male Shepard can form the most personal bond with her. This ability is based on nothing else but your own character's gender. This means Jack's sexual orientation shapes her view of you, it affects whether she finds you a person who can be trusted with this type of bond. And doesn't the way we treat others define what sort of a person we are? As long as it does then whatever it is in us that influences our treatment of others, that also defines us as a person.
