Alright, I've just started playing ME2 and have to say that I'm surprised and saddened that - as far as I can tell - there are no longer any key-bindings (or even the option to assign key-bindings) to either the Level Up screen or to auto-select weapon types.
As I play a Soldier class my character rarely uses abilities, and the few times he does I'm happy to hold down shift and select it from the menu. Weapons, on the other hand, need to be changed constantly depending on the situation and in combat I would regularly hit keys F1 to F4 to switch between weapon types.
Considering ME2 is even more focused on combat than the original, I see no good reason for these key-bindings to have been removed. While the X key allows me to quickly switch between my last two weapons, if I'll only be concentrating on two weapons I might as well restart this game as a different class.
Surely other PC players have experienced this? Having to pause the game constantly to switch weapons ruins the pace, and if key-bindings can be assigned to abilities there seems no logical reason why they can't also be applied to weapon types.
Soldier class Problem: Key-Binding Weapons (like F-keys in ME1)

If I recall correctly, you are able to cycle weapons on PC with either the mousewheel or by dragging a weapon to the quick cast bar at the top of the screen and then using the associated shortcut for each button. Either of those options should allow you to switch weapons as needed.

Sometimes I get the impression that everyone here play ME2 on PC but me.

This is unfortunately not a very good resolution though- for a start you can't change the order that your weapons switch with the mousewheel and it takes a while to switch.
Also they don't seem to be in any logical order (lightest -> heaviest or w/e) and sometimes it changes order , like if you pick up an upgraded version of a weapon

If dragging a weapon to the quick cast bar at the top of the screen were allowed that would solve the problem; unfortunately that only works with abilities.
As Vadrillan points out, the mouse wheel option is needlessly time-consuming and so not what you want in the middle of a battle. It just seems bizarre that they'd remove such a feature (the same goes for the key-bind to the Level Up screen) entirely: move Quick Save to F6 and you have five free F keys so even the grenade launcher could be accomodated. Although in my opinion the grenade launcher is yet another thing that slows down combat as it now needs to be equipped and unequipped even if all you want to do is toss a single grenade.

Bioware dropped the ball on the PC UI and controls, no doubt. There are several things like this, like how "Space" (I remapped this to Shift AND E) serves no less than 4 functions.
On a keyboard. That's just insane. I don't know about you guys, but I have no lack of buttons on my keyboard.

I don't know, I love the controls.
Really, they are almost identical to the one in ME1.
The drag and drop/crash bug is a biatch though, that is no question.

My number one gripe with ME2 has to be the helmets. I refuse to wear anything other than the standard N7 armour, regardless of the benefits of my 'limited edition Blood Dragon suit'.

If bioware would just patch in these key bindings and double click, this game would be nearly perfect on the pc. Please bioware, just patch it in.

Is there any way to create a bind function or just use weapon switch commands that might be lurking within the engine still by editing ini files? (unreal 3 legacy code?)
if not then yeah this is something that really SHOULD be patched into the game, as well as the ability to remap sprint without having to edit the ini files. (disabling corpse cleanup would also be nice)

I switch weapons with the mouse wheel. I don't remember how soldier works but with the Vanguard it does progresses from light to heavy (pistol/submachinegun/shotgun/heavy weapon).
With this order we can't change from pistol to shotgun but lets say you got the shotgun equipped. You can easily hit X to change to the machinegun and then wheel down if you need the pistol. It's far from perfect (two "shortcuts" instead of one) but that's pretty much the only workaround this problem we have (besides pause).
With soldier I believe you will be using the assault rifle most of the time. Remember to which weapon wheel up or down will change to, and learn how to work you way around from there. Unfortunatelly, considering the fact the you will have AR most of the time, you better get used to whatever weapon comes up or down because that's going to be your secondary weapon. The one you will relegate to the "X buttom".
You could always pause at the start of a stage and make your little set up with the x buttom. But in this case you would be limiting yourself to only two weapons as you would lose access to the mouse wheel (it would mess your setup).
After you get yourself confortable with your new secondary weapon learn which weapon you will be able to access from there from the mouse wheel. Eventually you will learn the order and when you do you will have access to pretty much all weapons with two shortcuts (x + mouse wheel or two wheels up or down). I suspect that the weapon far from the AR in the wheel (the one which will require three wheels) will be the one which unfortunately you should pretty much forget about if you want a fast run and gun gameplay. I just hope that isn't the sniper...
Again, I admit this is far from perfect and that shortkeys would be great to have. But we don't. Also everytime you get a new weapon in a stage the order will be messed up... yeah, it seems like Bioware doesn't want us to have easy access to our weapons. Soldier surely got shafted in the shortkey departament.

The Soldier weapon order is Pistol, Sniper, Shotgun, Assult Rifle, Heavy... Makes no sence to me. Think it wuld work better with Pistol, Shotgun, Assult, Sniper then Heavy.

Yep, yep ... as awesome as soldiers are, the lack of weapon keybindings really discourages me from playing them.
Quite sure the editor can alter weapon loadouts (in order to change their order), but it's still a poor solution.
If I'm going to play soldier again, I'll have to look into figuring out how to keybind.
On the subject of weapon orders getting messed up, I've been making a habit of getting to a weapon locker ASAP to fix it ... else I get confused. And that's with playing non-soldiers. I almost got splattered during Tali's recruitment due to the mouse wheel deciding it's heavy weapon time.

Even as a soldier I very rarely use more than two weapons. Sniper rifle and assault rifle will handle anything and everything just fine and dandy, especially after you get the viper. So I just use the last weapon key binding (I use v or x and hit it with my thumb or the mouse wheel click button) and just pause anytime I need a heavy weapon. I can see why you would want it, but functionally I don't see it as an issue at all.
