It will not be the same cast though it makes sense. Problem is, they can all die and Bioware have already shown us what they'll be doing to characters that can die ( relegated to NPC roles) and have furthermore stated that one reason your original crew is not in this game is because they want them to be alive for the third game. The subtext here is that any character that dies will not make into ME3. Any that do, however, will have a cameo or be wriiten out somehow.

It's all rather silly. Bioware, for all the innovating things they are doing here seem to be operating with a traditional mindset developing the games as typical "sequels" like say Gears of War or Uncharted 2 or any game sequel in particular: it's a new cast, new story, new villains, etc. The stories do not have to cohere in any real sense - it's just another adventure with the main character. This is what ME2 generally feels like and this feeling will only be worsened when you come to ME3 only to have to start over again.

Whatever they end up doing, they won't alienate the casual gamer audience. Not after the success of ME2.

Those who still think this trilogy will end up as some intricately interconnected plotting master piece, are in for a disappointment. The devs have brought up Indiana Jones movies multiple times, as opposed to something like Star Wars.

Individual, loosely connected, standalone episodes.

For what its worth, I do believe some of the actions in ME1 and ME2 will carry pretty heavy consequences. But nothing too major that would cause diverging plot lines.

like i and others said Bioware will not punish those who have played the series through honestly if someone is starting a game in the third instalment theres something wrong with them i didnt pley the first ME till january to be honest i wasn't an RPG fan but after playing ME i fell in love and for them to screw those who will play all three is well unexeptible and should not be the case.

like i said before have it where the new guys have a codex entry explaining how the cast got recruited and there backstory and be done with it
