Do the human cruisers in the final video shoot missiles and mass accelerator shots? *spoilers*

*spoilers fi you haven't beaten the game*

I ask because when you watch the final cutscenes, it seems that the ships shoot two different kinds of shots - small, fast, rapid fire mass accelerator slugs, and larger, slower missile thingies (the geth fire a bunch of these). The slugs never seem to do any damage, but it seems every time one of the missiles hit a ship other than Soveriegn or the Destiny Ascendent, they destroy it in one hit. I'm rather confused.

Even more so, because quoteth the Codex: "Kinetic Barrior shields changed starship battles from short, vicious bloodbaths to extended, indecisive slugging matches." and the clips we have of fleet action make it seem very fast with so many ships blowing up so fast.

Those slower missile thingies are probably disruptor torpedoes (which have an entry in the ME1 codex). As the codex states, disruptor torpedoes fly too slowly to be stopped by kinetic barriers, and they work by generating unstable mass effect fields that literally tear their target apart (similar in effect to the Warp biotic ability, but on a much larger scale).

It's odd that so many of these torpedoes get through, however, as most modern warships are supposed to have GARDIAN laser defense systems that are designed to shoot down and destroy these torpedoes before they hit.

Sounds like the Blackstorm in ME2 is a portable Disrupter Torpedo Launcher, i like the thought of that.

Actually, they are too heavy to be stopped, which is why they accelerate slowly. Which is why they are only launched from fighters and frigates (only in javelin racks). Both of which are launched in large waves to overwhelm the GUARDIAN defense system.

Notice, they aren't launched from what I assume are cruisers (if the alliance only has 8 or 12, how could they field the probably 20+ in that last scene?), nor are they launched in sets of two, or from long range.
