I think Awakenings was first intended for a new character but a lot of people wanted to carry their character over so bioware made a way for that to happen.
As far as your other companion's, the way the end of Origin's ended they have their own lives to live. I don't want to say to much about them because not everyone choose more than 1 playthrough lol.
Also Bioware has not said they are ending any continuation for Origin's with Awakenings. There's going to be more expansions, probably more oportunities to be able to play with our Origin's companions. Who knows what they've got planned but I don't think we've heard the end of our favorite companions. Just not in this expansion.
And with that said, less than a month now for the new expansion n I can't wait lol. Already preordered mine

If things are not like i described above let me tell you devs that you wasted one of the most original and cool ideas i have seen for a game in a long time killing the best ending choice for Origins (IMO) in the process.

What happened to my dog? Is he dead?
No, your dog isn’t dead. Your faithful hound is still out there. He’s just not on this adventure. We wanted to introduce new characters in Awakening and although Dog doesn’t speak – the loveable mutt still needs a lot of cinematic attention to bring to life. So we spent our time on new characters that are more tightly integrated into the story.
Well your cutting the budget on Dog, saves my budget from buying the expansion. So thanks for saving me money! I appreciate you letting me know in advance.

Thank you for posting this. I for one, am happy there are no new romances...I think they'd be really rushed in a new expansion.
I'M just relieved that the old romancable characters aren't dead/randomly broken up with your character. I think I was just overly paranoid after Obsidian's Mask of the Betrayer *shudders* That makes them not being there a lot easier to handle!

I love how you devs are avoiding what in my opinion is the most important question: If i made the decision of sacrificing myself at the end, will i be able to load that ending and play as the Orlisian Grey Warden hearing tales of my ols hero and seeing how my old hero desicions affected the world?? will i see a statue of my old hero?? (this could be done VERY easy, importing my old character image and making it big and grey and there you have an epic statue and epic moment in the game).

Er... im a US person too but idc about the staute or anything. most of us wan the story to flow, and suddeny haveing are character pop out of the growned for no reason bothers alot of us.
Also in the thing you say basicly if you dont care about the story neither do we. well your not giving us an option to let the story work and flow as it should, if we import they come to life and if we do orlesian we get canon choices.
your not giving us good options

Do the specialisations and new spells only work in Awakening? Would add some replayability to the main campaign if we could use them in it.
They're only for Awakening

So... your not getting the expansion because Dog isn't in it? Wierd, but it's your money I guess. Whatever floats your boat.

I don't think that answers the dog thing very well. Where exactly is he?

Why don’t my DLC items carry forward?
The root of the issue is that the previously released DLC was not built in such a way that those DLC items import properly into Awakening.
Rather than spending the resources addressing this thorny issue in multiple DLCs, we spent our time adding features and polish that made Awakening better.
That's pretty much what I wanted to hear. I guess I'll go preorder to expansion some time next week.

The expansion represents a complete lack of connection to my warden's story and the choices he made. There's little reason his Romantic interest wouldn't be with him, but there's no valid reason his dog wouldn't be with him. (Especially given that he's the human nobleman.) There's just no reason the dog would still be alive and not with him. None.
It would be like saying my left arm won't be in the expansion.
So in short, I'm paying nearly the full price of the original game to lose all my favorite characters and have them replaced with the very unispired selections we have so far. Not terribly interested. Whatever happens in Awakening isn't my warden's tale. Maybe on the next game.

You realise everything you just said is assumption. We don't know why the romance isn't with you (but we do know it will be represented in some form), we don't know why dog isn't with you (may be explained, he may also make a cameo), We don't know how big of an impact your origins play through will have and it's way to damn early to pass judgment on the new cast.Cutlass Jack wrote...

Role a new character, I'm tempted to roll a new *simi origin* because it sounds pretty damn cool and diffrent then playing as the Warden.
The next expansion might not allow you to play as your warden, and it's looking like DA2 will have you create a new character.
Bottom line ask yourself, do you like the world and franchise of Dragon Age or do you only like DA:O.

What assumption would that be? They've already told us our dog, our romantic interest, and everyone but Oghrun wouldn't be in this expansion. Why would I pay for a cameo? Every bit of information they've revealed so far paints Awakening as a rushed out add on to squeeze some extra money out of fans of the franchise. Its not a real sequel by their own words.
Bottom line is that its so far its shown nothing thats worth me purchasing it. If the reviews prove otherwise I may consider buying a used copy later down the road. But I'm not interested in what they're offering for the price they're offering it.
I'd have to hear more on DA2 before I'd commit either way on it. But that has absolutely nothing to do with Awakening.

You have no idea how they will be handled. If their absence makes sense and is explained then it fits into your Warden's story, and your playthrough is not ignored. Alistair's in it, so at least thats one romance option represented.Cutlass Jack wrote...

As far as saying it's rushed... thats clearly an assumption. You don't know how long they've been working on it or what the final product will be like.
As far as it not being a sequal, um, duh it's an expansion and it has been since it's accouncement. Why would anyone claim or think otherwise?

This is fair enough.
