Will you still limited to 3 companions? I would be nice to take every know companion all of the adventures you encounter in Awakening.

Everything points to him being dead, although I doubt that it was actually his body we saw at FD.  Sure, it's coincidential, but that's if he managed to live through Howe's assault at the Highever castle and was taken prisoner.  If he did die at Highever, then the amount of time that passed between the attack and the Warden's capture at Denerim would have to have been weeks, or months, putting his body into a state of decay (why I'm throwing science into this, I don't know).

That being said, what do you guys think the next revealed specialization is?  Personally I'm thinking the Shadow specialization, seeing as how the page on the Bioware wiki for it had been updated with some info like the class benefit being +1 dex and +5 attack.  We'll probably get a warrior after that.

Hi all :)

Well, I've come late to these boards, and mostly to find out if some of the rumours I'd heard about Awakening were true. Unfortunately it seems that they are.

This was an expansion I was looking forward to, but I'm disappointed by what I've read in this thread and elsewhere. To me, a big part of what makes Origins special is the way you are drawn further into the game via the well-developed interreactions and relationships with (and between) your companions and of course, the romance, all of which we had to work at as we progressed. It drew me into the story and made me feel part of it in a way that the usual hack-and-slash game never does.

Too many key parts of the original seem to be being thrown away to justify this being called an expansion. It may turn out to be a fine game
on its own merits and the additions may well be good, but it isn't what I would expect in what is advertised as an expansion to Origins. Nor is it something likely to appeal to my wife, who is even more
into the relationships side of things than I am.

A couple of quotes from others from this thread that help to sum things up:

Cutlass Jack wrote...

Well its one
of those things that should be incredibly obvious I thought. Its hard
for a game to be emotionally engaging when your emotions aren't
engaged. Once you force the player in this expansion to put aside
everything they're emotionally attached to just for the sake of
'killing new stuff' you create a disconnect between their story and the
world they live in.

It doesn't mean the expansion is without
merit, of course. Just that It shelved an important part of what made
Origins so great. Its heart.

It all comes down to playstyles..methinks, some are more into roleplaying...some are more into killing bosses..

Bioware
made a great story in my opinion..and its too bad..really too bad that
they can't give us more of the same, they got us attached to the
characters/interaction be it romantic or not.

Then whoop they
are gone.   I think in some ways the fans are actually missing those
characters, and I would say that would be a normal reaction..even down
to missing the Dog.

A slight exaggeration methinks, Cancermeat. ;)

And you have chosen to refer to just a footnote from my post, not the message. :)

lol :)

Well the foonote is now removed to help you concentrate on the main points. :)

P.S. and I didn't say I was going to buy it; in fact it is unlikely as it stands. ;)

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed your fun and I confess I got a smile out of our exchange too. :)

Too many key parts of the original seem to be being thrown away to justify this being called an expansion. It may turn out to be a fine game

Here's what I don't get, how does creating a whole new story from stratch justify an expansion?  In my experiance Expansions expanded on what you already had.  Throne of Baahl expanded on your story and even added addtional romance stuff.

Diablo II Lord of Destruction gave you two new classes, new items and a new act to your original game.

Morrowind's Tribunal and Bloodmoon, and Oblivion added new areas to explore with new monsters and what not.

Starcraft's Brood Wars and Warcraft's Frozen throne continued the story with the same group of characters

Even the expansions from Half Life revolved around the same event just through the eyes of different characters.

Seems to me Bioware is trying to do what they did with Neverwinter Nights, and it worked there, but I don't think it works for this game because people got to emmotionally involved with the story in Origins.  It wasn't a throwaway story like you had in NWN.

Now I can understand if Alistair, Wynne, Morrigan and Shale aren't adventuring with you.  Morrigan left you, Allistair has a country to goveren, Wynne is dying, and Shale could have gotten bored.

But the Dog, Liliana and Zevran?  Those three will follow you to the ends of the earth unless you ask them not to.    How is are they going to address those three not following you anymore?

I can understand why there are no romances in the expansion pack. I only hope that the next full release will include romance options. While I am certain that they are time consuming to write and difficult to integrate, I must say that the relationships of the companions, in all there permutations, are what kept me glued to this game for weeks. There are a lot of hack and slash games out there, but what kept me fascinated were the personalities of my companions and the interactions I could have with them. Please, please reassure us that future full releases will have this depth of character, and amazing storylines.....

Although I did not express it well above, I think the "no romance" part of the expansion pack is very short sighted on the developer's part. I got into all this through a little $20.00 hack and slash dungeon crawler game and was thinking the whole time I was playing it that there had to be something more....and then there was: Dragon Age: Origins. I've done a lot of playthroughs on this game just to see how it turns out when you romance different people. I am going to miss that in this expansion...It's like I keep trying to get excited by Mass Effect (the first one, I'm new to this) and I keep looking for the story, the story....but so far, it hasn't gotten to me the way DAO has.

I certainly hope Lelianna is a playable character in later expansions, she was always in my party! I certainly hope Awakening has a lady character who is comparible to her!

I'd also like to see Leliana back as a similar companion in a future (genuine) expansion or a sequel. Zevran too.

Morrigan may have left us, but she is still out there somewhere and could return.

I think there are many great opportunities to expand on their stories. Just one for instance; we could accompany Leliana and Zevran back to their lands in order to to help them resolve the issues that made them leave in the first place.

There is a new lady character in Awakening, though we can't romance her of course. I saw a short teaser video of her somewhere. However her rather harsh accent grated on me after experiencing the lovely soft accent of Leliana and all the other excellent voices used in Origins.

P.S. The above wasn't the newly announced character Mhairi. A video of her has just been released and her voice is fine.

I think I may cry... I've been looking forward to the expansion for months and now I don't want to install it because i will lose all the storyline i have invested hours of play time and loads of thought and emotion into. I actually mentally role played this game as played it and suddenly the three dimensional characters I have created will be re written into dungeon hackers :-( I'm really very disappointed in what I have heard about Awakening so far, the thing I liked most about Origin was the interpersonal options... These options are what made Dragon Age my favorite rpg of all time!!

If we're not going to be able to carry forward and/or renew our investment into the interpersonal and emotional side of Origins in Awakening, then in a way it may be better that cherished companions like Leliana aren't in it. However I also find it illogical that this so-called expansion leaves out both them and the inter-personal heart of Origins and because of that I think I would find it difficult to engage with the storyline of Awakenings.

Well, I can only  hope Bioware has a genuine expansion or a sequel to Origins in the pipeline that will set things right. I saw that Victor Wachter hinted in the opening post that our companions could return to us in the future - I hope that would be in a form that will allow us to pick up with them again where we left off and not just as some sort of cameos.

[Edited to read more 'informally': Drat! Years of writing reports in my job makes me slip into report kind of language sometimes. Apologies - I assure you I don't talk like that down at the pub!  :P]

I agree with many points from folks on this page. I was drawn to DragonAge because I love questing games. But this one really sucked me in because as stated above it is not a slash and dask kill only.I loved my relationships I developed with each of my companions. You interact with people, when you play you are your character you feel what they feel including romantic and non-romantic relationships. They are your buddies and/or lover and your choices not only affect you but them. I do hope as well that in the next full release they make it just as good or better than Origins. I as well would love to see Leliana and Zevran come back. They were my two favorites in addition to Oghren. It is nice to have another game where you can create an RPG character to reflect you or your inner self and have interpersonal relationships that make it more realistic and fun. That is a how a game should be.

I am very curious though to see how Awakening patches in to my games. I have one with the self-sacrifice, one where I am queen, one where Anora is queen and Alistair and I are lovers and just Grey Wardens (with Zevran in tow as body guard), and one where Alistair is king and I am his chancellor and then last one is where Alistair and Anora are ruling. Should be rather interesting to see what happens. Every expansion pack will have pros and cons with but it will not deter me from buying it. Am on pins and needles till March 16th.

I too hope that Awakenings represents an interlude in the main story arc, rather than some type of conclusion or wrap-up

I just updated the main thread with something that I think you'll like:

UPDATE: I learned today that we would be able to import items from Return to Ostagar into Awakening. So, don't strip out of King Cailan's armor or drop Duncan's Dagger!

That is wondeful news! Thanks for the info. I doubt this means Warden's Commander armor will transfer over too though right? I mean the item set bonus is still bugged on the 360..
