Why are there no romances in Awakening?
The story is primarily about the threats to Amaranthine, which if left unchecked could threaten Ferelden and more. The new companions were designed to be tightly integrated into that story. To make them romanceable characters we’d have designed them quite differently and would’ve changed several of the plots. We didn’t want to just tack on romance options. Short version – not all stories need to have a love interest.

(Sincerly) I like the way you answered this question.  You gave us the marketing part first which I call shenanigans as my warden had time to romance multiple companions and camboodle here and there during a Blight.  However the bolded part is the interesting part as the romance subplots have been an integral part of Bioware games for about a decade and no one has a clear perception on how much this impacts enjoyment of the game or immersion.  It is a very small cost I would assume to add romance especially if you go the ME route which is 3 extra conversations and classy giggidy scene but it might increase people's enjoyment of the game.  I myself found the romances to be bad in DA:O compared with ME2 and BGII excluding Alistair which was well written.  I'm generally curious as too how much the fan base will react to lack of romances, is it a big deal for a lot of people, is it a big deal for a small number of people, or is it just wasted resources?  Being an expansion it will be hard to evaluate this as expansions usually mean less demand but it will be interesting lurking the fan base after launch.

If the DLC content will not be usable, what will happen to characters (like mine) who are decked out almost entirely in DLC equipment? (ie. my character is wearing the Warden's Keep armour and the Helm of Honoleth and wielding the Starfang 2h sword.)

Will my character simply wake up naked? Or will an appropriate replacement be available from the very start?

You'll probably end up in whatever default armor the Orleisian warden starts with.

Another request here for some answer about the choices made during an US conclusion to DAO. Its absence is very notable.

You guys also have to realize the community is also a major help to those who want certain companions ( Heck theres a mod that adds so many other characters from the story line as companions although no dialogue.) The mod teams could probably edit in the dog and your love interests into the game some how.

Well, that settles it. I'm going to wait an see about the DLC item issue before I decide to buy. Thanks Bioware for responding to our concerns.

I was looking forward to this expansion, I paid for it in full last month in fact, but honestly I am getting nervous and thinking about getting my money back and just waiting to see what others think of it. They took out the romance option, which adds a lot to the game in my opinion. And it sounds like they just plan to "sweep under the rug" any romances if your character is imported. If this is the case then it would also take the fun out of the original game, knowing there is no point in a relationship. I only hope that it will at the very least acknowledge relationships, or that you are Queen or King or just tie in to how you ended DAO. And Oghren. Why?? I would probably use him as much as I do now. Which is to say, very little, unless I want a laugh. If there is a two-handed weapon fighter in my party, it is me. I would rather Alistair, Wynne, or Zevran, characters that I find quite usefull. It sounds to me like you could just call this a new game altogether and I won't even bother importing my character. And that stinks. Before this game I was not what you would call a fan of RPGs. DAO brought a whole bunch of things that made me really enjoy it and actually became my favorite game. I'm just a little dissapointed in how this is sounding I guess since they are removing some of the things that made me love the original game. And why so many mages? What would be the point of being a mage yourself.
( I'm done ranting. Sorry about the tantrum)

I have a few questions:

1) What are your plans for those people who have 6,8,10 or so of these non importable items? Are you going to replace them with something different when they are imported? Give the PC starting gold? or free gear? Or do you just exoect them to import half naked and then hope that they have the requisite gold to buy these cool new items or start off with a bunch of vanilla gear?

2) Do you really expect players to go back to a previous save and identify, remove, replace all the DLC gear themselves? I doubt most people know every item that is\\\\is not DLC.

3) Are you going to pre warn your customers from now on when items from DLC don't carry forward? Or should we just expect that Awakenings items, or Awakenings DLC items will not carry forward past this little adventure?

I don't know about the download content. I have a ton of mods that aren't official and I'm guessing they won't import over either. So again I say that it is likely that I will just be starting over with the Orlais warden (yay). Not happy about all the money I spent on all the DLC. I doubt they will warn people. I can't believe they didn't make it so their official content doesn't come through. Dissapointing indeed. In all honesty I won't miss the blood talents that you get in Wardens Keep. The swords however......and the kings armor. Very sad. Posted Image

The companions in Origins are still in the Dragon Age universe and possibly up to things you’ll see in the future.

Call me Pessimistic Pete but that says to me not to expect anything but lame ME2 style cameos for your favourite companions in future DA games.

It's good to see devs take the time to address issues but to me it read "New and shiny > continuity and what you loved about the first game."

I have a question. If I deleted DLC (e.g. Shale) will that mean that I won't be able to meet Shale in awakening?

As it should be, in my opinion (at least as long as we are talking about party members). :) Most of the Origins characters already ran their course. We know them, we know what makes them tick. There is little mystery left in most of them. I appreciate how they have Oghren in as a sort of personal link to the former adventures, but overall I want something new for a new game, and I'm truly glad we're getting it! And continuity is overrated. As long as it doesn't go the realm of blatant retconning, I'm happy. :)

Hi all,

Why don’t my DLC items carry forward?
The rewards in Awakening quickly outpace the best items you’d find from Origins and Origins’ DLC. The root of the issue is that the previously released DLC was not built in such a way that those DLC items import properly into Awakening.

Rather than spending the resources addressing this thorny issue in multiple DLCs, we spent our time adding features and polish that made Awakening better. We believed that since the gear was quickly replaced that this wasn’t a major issue. We are currently investigating solutions for a possible patch. Some silver lining to this, the “Power of Blood” abilities from Warden’s Keep do import properly into Awakening.

Very strange. So you created DLC while working on an expansion but didn't make them compatible?  People payed for the DLC and you didnt expect them to be angry about loosing them all, especially RTO that was released about 2 months before the expansion? And you didnt consider the loss of immersion either which is a big thing to the RPG market to which you cater? Very strange indeed.

I sure hope you can pull off that patch! Posted Image.

16 spells??

two new spell trees?

did you count the specialisations as spells or seperatly...

and how is spell tree meant one line, or one grid....

I rather had a fifth skill behind every spell line... which makes for 16 spells excluding specialisations....

16 (unfortunately): 4 spec 1; 4 spec 2; 4 tree 1; 4 tree 2.

I had hoped for 4-4-16-16. oh well.

So is Ogren the old favorite that bioware refers to ? If he is then thats a load. Ogren was a good character, but I dont think he is important enough to be had keeped a secret. And no romances, what the #%&%, I thought thats was one of the features that made DA:O great. These answers dont offer much, just things we keep on hearing over and over from everyone else. I think Im losing faith in Bioware, but I'll wait till I play Awakening.

It will be especially interesting once the modders transfer the items over which I expect to see very soon after its released.

While I still would like to know what my dog is doing while not on my adventure, I am very happy to learn that he is not dead. I will be changing my sig now to"Bioware lost my dog" until I receive an answer. Sorry for the false murder accusation.

that's so odd....

so it's like a half  school, the spells from battlemage actually seemed like 5th tier spells to accompany every line....

I think that, if we look at an outside view of Role Playing, without levels and all, a Dog isn't really a good enough companion for a hard task. Heck, Eamon even refused him as my champion! Why would the KING or QUEEN accept Dog as world saving character. And besides, he can't undergo the ritual, with says most of the thing... Well, he could technically, but does he really know what he's doing?

Also, let's keep in mind dog is only 3 years old :P

I'll always love DA:O though. I just hope Bioware doesnt fail us with Awakening. They say you can import you warden from Origins, just how much does the decions you made in Origins affect the new story in Awakening ? How deep do they go ? Does it massive effect to the story, or just little thing that make you go, huh thats all. I heard the answer to this question already, but like all the other answers, there short and blunt. No real sense of having my questions answerd. I gained huge respect for Bioware by playing DA:O, and Awakening will test my faith in them. If they can deliver again in Awakening, I will never question Bioware again.

Honestly I've been kind of puzzled by the way a lot of people are with the romances. To me, they have never been a "must have" thing. Know how many romances Baldur's Gate had in it? Zero (I'm not talking about the second one, but the first Baldur's Gate). Same thing with the first Fallout. And everyone was just fine with it. Now every Bioware game is expected to have a romance for some weird reason. I myself didn't even pursue a romance of any kind in Mass Effect because I couldn't justify romancing an officer under my millitary command. I still had fun playing the game though and this left me free to pursue a romance in Mass Effect 2 after discovering it had romances as well. But I never thought "if Mass Effect 2 has no romances I'm not getting the game!"

What about our Gold? and items in Inventory? Are they going to be carry over just fine? All that I'm concerned about are my assets here.
