I'll throw this one out there. There could be a story reason as to why he's wearing Phoenix armor.

I remember after Virmire that he and Shep had a conversation about dealing with Ash's death. Each time it was concluded that there wasn't time to think about it. Well, after the battle of the Citadel, I could see that loss weighing on the crew.

So, maybe he put on the phoenix armor as a tribute to Ash. It sounds like something that he'd do. Besides that, Kaidan wouldn't really care what color his armor was if it just did the job it was supposed to do.

hehehe...that armor must stretch...wait a sec?  that bosh' det better not have been cheating on me with Ash!

A set of phoenix, not hers. Kind of like wearing a kind of clothing in memory of someone used to wear it. The Req. officer was right there, and Shepard always gets loot. I'm sure it was hanging around. Maybe Shepard was going to get some but needed to find it.

But this is a made up story as to why he's wearing it... but it does make sense!

*sighs* I guess I'll take it.  It's sweet and Kaidanesque.  All though I did enjoy the Red vs Blue answers too.

It was the first armour he found and he decided he'd be more useful helping Shepard and the rest of the crew get to safety than going around trying to find cooler looking armour while the Normandy exploded around him. Alenko's got his priorities straight!
