Ok, I'm trying to help the lovers recover/destroy the phylactery; found "back door" which is really a wall that we need to break through.  I need to have a specific item to do it.  What is that item and where do I find it?  

Also on subject of items:  Is there a way to transfer items between characters?

If you're talking about the Mage origin, then the item in question is the fire rod you acquired earlier. Just click the dog, the power should be amplified, and in you go! (Assuming you've moved the bookcase aside already. It's just a quick cutscene.)
