Hah! I always knew he had a devilish side to him. That religious "I've worked too hard to be good looking to die" attitude was just a ruse. :P

He wanted to keep you for himself, but since he was going to die, he took you with him! classic Romeo and Juliet syndrome!

The smell of burning flesh permeates the air

My feet land hard on the deck

I hear her call from behind me

Hand grasping vacant air

I call shotgun.

Okay, that's just...I don't know what to say. Thane, you meanie! Maybe doing that was his plan all along. PLOT TWIST!

Wait. So, basically, Thane, Joker and EDI will have to save the galaxy now? Sounds like a story.

EDI will just need to catch a computer virus, so they all have a disease.

So...my Shepherd wanted to make the Normandy a little more romantic.  That means clearing out the crew, the squad, and so on.  The plan leaves just Shepherd, Thane, and-- er, well Joker and EDI are still there, but they're busy flirting awkwardly so it's not too troublesome.

Step 1: Win Thane's trust by helping him with his son.  [SUCCESS]
Step 2: "I want you, Thane."  [SUCCESS]
Step 3: Wait for Collectors to clear out the crew. [SUCCESS]
Step 4: Head to Omega4.  Use Garrus as specialist, Mordin as team leader, Jacob as walking biotic shield.  Don't send anyone back with the crew when they are found.  Lots of people die.  [SUCCESS]
Step 5: So close!  Take Thane and Jacob to the final battle, leave Miranda behind to fend off 100+ Collectors by herself.  [SUCCESS]
Step 6: Jacob becomes pancake.  Miranda becomes swiss cheese.  Thane: alive!  [GREAT SUCCESS]
Step 7: Run back to the ship with Thane.  He leaps safely onto the Normandy's deck.  Joker hangs around pretending he's a gangster.  [SUCCESS]

And then...Shepherd notices something.  After Thane jumped onto the deck he scrambled immediately inside.  Didn't care that Shepherd wasn't on the boat yet.  Didn't even look back as "siha" plummeted 40 stories to her doom because there was no one to pull her up.

Shepherd died horribly for two reasons:
1) Not enough pull-up exercises.
2) THANE IS A JERK.

So the moral of this story is, you now know you need to have 2 people survive the final mission :P

Am actually surprised, because a few people have stated that as long as you have 1 loyal person either in the final battle team or on the door defence, at least 1 non-loyal member will survive.

I also got to ask, as am assuming you had cannon upgrade to ensure Thane's survival. Which person didn't you have in your party, Samara or Grunt?

I think I do. Haven't laughed that hard all day. You can perfectly picture him saying this.

Well, I see your shepard was the jerk, leaving everyone to die just so you can have some "romantic" scene...Thane is the man tbh. Also, what you expect from an assassin who has less than a year left to live... (-__-)

Well Grunt was never unthawed because he would make a nice statue in the new dining room-for-two Shepherd was planning to build.

She falls, hollow screams sending pain through my ears.
The door closes.
He stares at me, eyes burning with anger.
He hits me.
Once, twice.
He stops, emotions vanishing from his face like the falling tide.
"Well done. I never liked that b*tch anyway. Set a new course to someplace sunny, EDI!"
He turns and leaves quickly, feet barely touching the ground.

Wonder what would've happened had you swapped Jacob and Miranda around. Would imagine Jacob got better chance of survival on the door defence and thus you might've had 2nd person that would've ensured Thane did stop to save you :P

No, no! Thane is clearly the jerk here. How can he just let his beloved fall to her death!? Maybe he was angry because she let so many people die, just to make room on the Normandy. Pff, just the perfect time to start showing remorse, Thane! Couldn't you have waited for a few more seconds to start having second thoughts? *sighs*

Thane did everything right. More than we could have hoped for. Destorying the Collectors - but leaving Shepard to die. Thane's place in the galaxy is stronger than ever... and still it's not enough. He's a hero, a bloody icon.

And even though Thane promptly died of his disease, freezing and thawing frogs is way easier than humans. An economic bonus for Lazarus 2.0!

In any case, how did you manage to let everyone but Thane die? I actually tried to do that once, but utterly failed! I guess too many of my squad members were loyal. Well, at least I know what happens now.

Arghh, that just made me laugh a lot more than it should have! Especially since I heard it all in Miranda's voice in my head. Even if that's impossible, since she died in the OP's suicide mission. Maybe TIM could hold that little speech instead?

Somehow it's tempting to imagine Thane and Joker saving the galaxy together in ME3. They'd make a hell of a team! :P

I can imagine a movie about the 2 of them already.

One is terminally ill and hydrophoic.
The other has brittle bones and makes terrible jokes.
But the reapers never saw them coming.
And they are about to find out.
In space, no one can hear you scream.

Tali and Jack died on ship am guessing, Thane survived due to armor upgrade (otherwise he'd be prime target for dead there)
Garrus dead in vents, Mordin dead as diversion team leader, Samara swarmed, legion sent to cerberus or not activated, grunt left in lifepod, jacob dead in final battle and miranda dead defending the door, leaving just thane alive.

That is what I am guessing from what the OP said anyway.

If grunt was left in his pod the collectors would have been mysteriously crushed by a falling pod.

All of them.

All at once.
