None of the sidequests are mandatory. However, completing some sidequests will have impacts in your ME2 game.

Sidequests aren't necessary I just did this to get the achievement and now I'm doing a final run on casual just to get the choices I want.

You can just rush through... it can be hard though on insanity. Some of the toughest fights are at low levels and if you haven't done the sidequests you'll be even lower.

If you load the cheats, especially supergun and superarmor, it takes just a few hours to create an insanity-level Shep who's completed only the main quests. Side missions are not required. ME2 storyline continuation of ME1 side quests (eg. Conrad Verner) are based on on your Paragon/Renegade standing at the end of ME1.
EDIT: A huge thank you to all the hackers who spent time digging for cheats in ME1. You've enabled many ME fans to quickly create ME1 Sheps that they prefer for their ME2 play-through. DEV's take note!
