Near the end we see the player able to take control of Garrus. Pretty sweet.

first off..why does this demo look better than both games? who the hell decided exploding armature bits shouldnt be in the final game? and my extreme collar grabbing action?! i demand ME3 use this old demo as a base for the game, its too awesome....how did the mako seemingly get worse controls in the final version? why does this incomplete demo PWN every feature of either complete mass effect game?! geez...im glad i never saw this until now, ME1 wouldve been a major disapointment for me if i expected all that....

well there ya go. that whole demo was awesome, and we all know that ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL would add a whole new tactical level that isnt possible with just directing them. id rather have the slightly less directly controlled in firefights story of shepard than continue the story of the epic leader with horrible leadership abilities and/ or minions.

I thought the system worked pretty well in ME2. Better and more responsive AI will always be wanted, but even on insanity, I never thought it was really necessary to ever control them directly. You can already tell them when to use a power.

Meh, honestly looked a bit worse to me. Look at the way he ****s (i.e. RELOADS! Damn you filter!) that shottie, ick.

But bear in mind that when they first started developing Mass Effect 1 that Bioware didn't have a full understanding of what the 360 would be capable of. This is why there's quite frequent slow-downs in the final version of the game.

No, you are commander shepard.

Yes, Commander Shepard. Commanding squadmates in the last two Mass Effect games have been rather futile (as has been developing a decent squad AI for them).

Actually, I'd like to see a variant of this. It'd be nice if someone could pick up the player two controller and control one of the squad mates. I know it's out there in left field and would involve split screen and some dev is probably pulling his hair out right now because of the whiny Mass Effect players who love the game so much they have to pick it apart like an elephant getting eaten by thousands of tiny ants....but I'm throwing it out there...

Considering Mass Effect is getting closer and closer to becoming Gears of War, I wouldn't be surprised if this happened.

I myself am not a fan of pause/play which is where I think this is going...I would rather them improve the AI of party members.

It seems like they can't, though. Enemies get ridiculously paranoid and take cover at all the right times when you crank up the difficulty to Insanity, yet your squadmates will still run into a barrage of enemy fire.

I wouldn't necessarily like to control them, but I'd like some way for their controls to be better integrated into the game.

I like the option of being tactical. I usually try and stick Garrus/Thane on some high ground with a good view and a sniper, grunt/Zaeed right up-front and personal, and the rest at a nice medium point, but it's not always easy, and a lot of them will go and tiddle in the place I tell them to be and then abandon it ten seconds later.

I understand that the weapon selected already alters behaviour, but I'd like to see that extened - at least with sniper rifles. If I tell Garrus to switch to a sniper and I don't direct him anywhere it would be nice to see his little turian head find a fantastic route to some good cover and make his way there without me having to tell him to.

It may be the result of being used to this feature from a pure BioWare RPG like Dragon Age, but it would be nice if we could actually play as our squadmates while AI takes over for Shepard. As much as Squad AI has improved ever so slightly, sometimes direct intervention is necessary. By assuming direct control over our squadmates, we can better position them so they don't run blindly into enemy fire. Less durable squadmates (like Tali and Jack especially) charge right in and do not realize that your form is fragile when you have no health bonuses.

To help balance the ability to transition from Shepard to squadmate, there could be a cooldown on switching (while having the AI preserve Shepard's body, if possible). It could also be an option for when Shepard dies - you can simply move onto commanding another squadmate as this death means nothing. After all, I'm sure there are people who would love to play as Garrus or Tali or Thane or Legion, even momentarily before releasing control. Perhaps if we can start a petition, then I will direct this personally and hope that they take notice.

I know you feel this, BioWare. As inventory and abilities have been simplified and streamlined (and we've been able to play as Joker in ME2), I don't see how this hurts you to include this feature in Mass Effect 3.

I see what you did there....

YOU CANNOT RESIST.

Originally in ME1 it was like that (youtube Mass Effect e3 2006), but it was removed and I don't think it will be added in ME3

never going to happen. bioware knows how to do this and chose not to. It is because Mass Effect is specifically "SHEPARDS STORY" and not "random kung fu fighter" or "random grey warden" story. because the character of SHEP is partly defined as canon, you will never control other characters.

this is paraphrased and my understanding of DEVs explanations in the past.

Wasn't this a potential thing for ME1, but they decided against it?

I wouldn't like it, personally. I like it the way it is, where we can give orders, but the other characters do their own thing.

Nah, controlling them directly wouldn't make much difference. You can already access their powers/weapons and direct them to use them at your command.

So, Shepard would be assuming Direct Control then?

Sorry had to do that!

Seriously, I am not sure it is needed. DA:O and games like that make sense because it is more of a tactical gameplay (although it is in real time, you can feel the turn base inside of it). While ME uses more of a shooter action paced combat model. You already have control of their abilities if you want to (turn autouse off in the options and give manual orders in the squad power menu which also pauses the game). All this would do is let you play another class while the AI controls your Shepard. It might offer a little bit of variety to your gameplay (man I am tired of being a soilder), but would do little towards improving the combat system.

Would be nice to have a couple of story lines going on at once, the main one with shepard... maybe you be the enemy in the lead up to the reaper invasion... maybe you play Kaiden in some other missions before a reunion...?

No. Being able to do so would just create more 'Shepard is a Reaper' conspiracy theories.

And every time I took control of one of them, I don't think I would be able to resist thinking to myself 'ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL' while doing so.

Against the idea, I hated the face DA:O offered no immersion for me. Character never spoke, you just ticked some text. Taking control of another character made me feel even more detached.

That's why I enjoy ME. Your story, your choices and the rest is your unified team backing you up.
