No, I would not want to control squad members any more than we can currently.

If they did that the game will have less replay value

The game would have more replay value, personally.  I'd love to strictly take control of Wrex or Grunt during all of the gameplay segments.  I've played KOTOR plenty of times where I did nothing but manually control Bastila.  Hell, I did that up until the Jedi training every time (until I got the PC version and modded it to where I'm a Jedi from the start).

I don't see how allowing us to take control of a party member would reduce replay value.

I rather see better AI so your squad behaves and adapts accordingly. ME2 squad AI was better in ME2 than ME1 so I think Bioware is on the right track.

The OP is one of the most witty and intelligent posts I've ever seen on these boards. 10/10 would read again.

It would almost feel like playing a different class, too.

I doubt we'll see this as BW is making ME play more like a shooter then a RPG.  Don't forget that the biggest thing they talked about before the game came out was the intense shooter game play, switching to another squadie if your char dies isn't really that intense.

never going to happen. bioware knows how to do this and chose not to. It is because Mass Effect is specifically "SHEPARDS STORY" and not "random kung fu fighter" or "random grey warden" story. because the character of SHEP is partly defined as canon, you will never control other characters.

this is paraphrased and my understanding of DEVs explanations in the past.

Didn't they kind of break that by allowing us to control Joker in ME2 though?

"ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL"

But yeah this is Shepard's story, to the point where Shepard does everything, from rbuying groceries to saving the galaxy.

Only on special non-combat oriented missions where their the only controlable character like the Estivarigo mission in ME2. Like controlling Legion as he infiltrates a geth world, Tali on the flotilla, Grunt in a Krogan fighting club (money making opportunity), or Mordin infiltrating an STG facility to steal data necessary to beating the reapers.

Actually, this would be good too.

It would have been nice to be able to play as the 'hold the line' or Fire Team controlling the leader you selected (much like the 'Hold the Gates' part in the final battle of Dragon Age). In fact, I was almost expecting it going into the final mission, but was disappointed when the only thing you get is extra radio chatter.

It definitely would have extended the epic-ness of the final mission.

they wont implement this, because they say "it's shepards story, from his perspective"

That excuse doesn't really work after letting us play as Joker.

IMO I like it how it is, just controlling Shepard.

the wheel thingy is all the squad control i need. though it would be nice if shep could play dead just like his squadies for stealing their cover.

Personally, when I have a squadmate stealing my cover, I like to vault over it from the other side and step on their heads. They glance back as if they were hit by a Harbinger bolt.

Do what they did with Joker in ME2 and I would be happy. I have hade no trouble with the AI so many you guys just don't know how to play or you got a buggy game? Hell I barly ever issue coomands and they always get in cover >_>

It depends on the squadmate and the weapon they are using. Miranda is one the best squadmates, but she has a tendency to run ahead to get cover as she doesn't have any long range weapons. She dies very easily on Insanity that way.

Updated the OP with suggestions.

...And for those of you keeping track of the other thing: There are 16 more.B)

EDITED POST: After reading a couple of suggestions from this thread and others, I'm sure there is a balance between adding a new 'feature' while not becoming like Dragon Age (although some people still insist that the story solely focus on Shepard). I'll list the suggestions in order of least likely to most likely to happen in Mass Effect 3, so take what is useful and destroy the rest.

1. Switch away from Shepard when he dies - If an enemy manages to neutralize Commander Shepard, you can switch to another squadmate upon death, one who gets a chance to medi-gel Shepard back while you continue attack. Yes, it seems like you've merely delayed the inevitable save reload, but at least it's not an automatic loss when you cannot resist staying out of cover a split-second too long.

2. Multi-squad missions - Suggested on a different thread, we need more missions that involve more than 3 people (Virmire, Collector Suicide Mission), but not necessarily assuming control or command of more than 3. We are not finished with the trilogy and we have at least 17 possible squadmates to see in ME3 without introducing new ones. Yet, there's no feeling of 'We fight as one' when most missions involve taking 3 people and leaving several behind on the Normandy. It would be even better if we could, in some form, control the leaders of side teams working in parallel with Shepard after Shepard completes his part. Even though this form is redundant, it certainly would extend the gameplay for multi-squad missions (and radio transmissions from the other team is NOT gameplay).
--On an added note, why couldn't we send Shepard to do some of the suicide mission tasks if enough of your allies have fallen? Shepard is capable of being a tech expert or biotic, is he/she not? For example, if you played an Infiltrator or Engineer Shepard, you could have been useful in running the vents yourself. If you played a Vanguard or Adept, you could have made the biotic shield. At the same time, you would control one of your other squadmates as they lead the primary team (of course, you can't just ignore the fallen when Shepard dies in the vents, so the choice of picking a good team leader matters even more!)

3. Short character-only side quests - Although this may be a problem since anyone can die in the final mission - and the dead are useless when it comes to extra quests, isn't it possible that BioWare can add side tasks or quests where we play as someone other than Joker? Even if it's just a Garrus calibration mission or simply running Garrus around the Citadel being discriminated against by C-Sec Security, at least we can have the experience of 'This is what you face everyday as a Turian' without drawing away from Shepard's story too much. After being able to play as Joker, I wouldn't be surprised if they took this route.

I hope BioWare at least considers one of these ideas, as they seem to drastically change gameplay elements with each Mass Effect while listening to the player's and critic's complaints. After all, no other series can quite embrace perfection like Mass Effect does...

Meh.... I think making the squad just more responsive to your commands would be enough...Improving the comands you can give would also be cool.

Maybe also being able to tell them to hack or bypass things for you (Of course they would have to take much more time than you do)

That would be a nice option/upgrade, but we all know what happens when we let other people hack/bypass stuff:

Squad still functions better than they did in ME1. Back then, if my teammates were behind me shooting at geth or whatever they would continuously shoot me in the back until I moved or died. They don't do that anymore, so it's an improvement.

I liked the combat as it was. I wouldn't mind missions like the joker one though. Maybe you could divide it into teams like you do in the final battle and take control of both teams. That would be fun.

That's what I was expecting when the suicide mission first started. Unfortunately, that's not what happened.

Main character as Garrus Vakarian

Even in ME1, it's possible... kind of.
