What if there was a Mass Effect game that wasn't an epic? By that I mean not having galaxy-wide consequences, not stopping some evil that threatens everything. Everything, the attack on the Citadel, Shepard's actions, the rise of the humans, etc, being simply a backdrop. Imagine being a turian investigator for C-Sec investigating a conspiracy, or a krogan mercenary getting embroiled in a war. Wouldn't it be interesting to just be a part of the universe?
It would be cool to import save files so that the setting can be minorly changed (Rachni , Wrex, Council), but other than that it would be a self-contained story.

I've always thought that being a soldier at Shanxi would make a fun squad-based shooter.

That just gave me another idea, what about where the opening part of the game is the First Contact War, then afterwards you're paired up with a turian who fought in the war too. Would make a neat character-based game.

Yeah for sure, I don't know if you saw 3:10 to Yuma, but maybe it could be something like that. The general premise is that Russel Crowe (is there an "e" in it?) is the bad guy and Christian Bale is the good guy, and by the end of the movie one can expect them to finally understand each other.

Obviously in your idea neither would be good or bad, but they would certainly be at odds with each other and hopefully come to an agreement at the end.

This is a great idea! Unfortunately, they don't have time to make it. I wonder what the plan is after ME3 is finished... If I recall, its a planned trilogy. Perhaps instead of making ME4 some kind of sloppy connection, they could do something like this...

would like to maybe see something about the prothean empire or the first contact war but everything you read in the game it was just really a skirmish so maybe they could go back to the start when humans found the prothean stuff on mars

Like I said, it wouldn't tie into the Shepard plot of saving the entire galaxy. I don't think I've ever seen a sci-fi work like this with everything just as a backdrop. It would be pretty interesting. It's like how Roger Ebert said that there should be a zombie movie, but with the zombies in the background.

They did this with Neverwinter Nights and Shadows of the Undrentide expansion. Chronologically they happen at the same time, but they happen at two different locations.

It could work. :)

I've always felt that Shepard is merely the main protagonist, and that theres many that are his equal, and possibly his better, out there kicking ass too.

The retired Marine colonel that builds a colonial militia to fight off slavers on humanity's fringe. The C-Sec agent that has to do her job, and do it well, despite all the obstacles bureaucracy has thrown in her way. A squadron of fighter pilots holding off a capital ship through sheer brass. Diplomats, tradesmen and street leaders fighting entirely different kinds of battles just to keep their homes standing and their people safe through wit and cunning.

Shepard is a Hero, but theres plenty more out there. The spotlight is just on him for now.

I'd love to see an ME expansion or stand alone title at some point. Just call it "The Unsung."
