Ahoy: If it's TL;DR, skip down to the bolded (not this bolded, of course!).

On the standard difficulty settings for Mass Effect 2, squadmates fare pretty well. They only drop when you're already totally overrun and not too far from death yourself. Things get a bit tougher on the higher difficulties when everything is far more deadly, and you evolve as a player to overcome this new challenges.

The squad mate AI doesn't develop as nicely as you do, however, and the feeling you have between your squaddies in combat usually treads into "babysitting" territory.

What I consider "babysitting" is having to flag your squad mates far away from the battle to avoid death due to staying out of cover for too long (while their shields are depleted), by advancing at moments where it's best to retreat, and by other general glitchiness like being stuck on top of a box and begging to get clips unloaded into them.

To further advance on Mass Effect's ever evolving customisability, I think quite a few could benefit from being able to modify your squad mate's behavior past active/defensive only power activation.

A few examples are as follows:
-They won't come out of cover if their shields are depleted
-They'll stay put in a certain piece of cover automatically as soon as enemies are engaged
-They'll always shoot at the enemy Shepard is currently attacking without using their powers
-etc.

What I do not think would be good to see are settings that have your allies use the appropriate skills on the proper enemy, i.e. Miranda always overloading the first shielded enemy in sight. I feel that this takes away all of the activity in combat, since much of the fun and skill is using the right abilities on the highest priority targets.

Overall, I feel that if such features were in place it would make the squad mates feel more like comrades-in-arms rather than just giving Shepard a few bonus abilities.

TL;DR - Allow us, to a certain degree, to customize our allies' AI behavior to prevent less Leeroy Jenkins-esque incidents.
