Anyone else find him a very interesting character? So far, out of all the people in my party, he is quite possibly the most intriguing for me, every time I think I've got him understood, and why he's here, what he wants, he surprises me with some new facet of his personality to figure out.

He's kind of annoying as a party member, and I can rarely take him with me on travels. due to his hatred of side quests, and also because Dog/Shale/Alistar is just such a powerful combo, but I just love chatting him up in the camp, and am hoping later on, if I manage to get him to like me, he might tell me more about his people, himself, and the reasons behind why he does things, although I think I might have some good ideas so far.

So kudos to whoever wrote Sten, he's a fascinating character, so much so that I've gotten to thinking of starting a game JUST to get him to full rep, just to see how he responds to me, and what information I can get from him, although I doubt it will come easily.

I agree I like the lore and conversations with him alot, but I admit he's going to be the first guy cut from the party. I'm hoping they explain more about his race and where he comes from, I know DAO is fairly local to Feraldran, but it's still nice to see what else they have in store for future games lore wise.

Sten has his uses, for my party which consists of

MC, city elf female warrior templar/champion build shield spec (love that taunt, have gotten in trouble with it)

Wynne spirit healer

Leanni lock picker set as protector for Wynne (use dirty tricks on anything that attacks Wynne till i can get over to taunt off)

Sten set as off tank wielding a vicious 2H axe set to attack what i am attacking.

This works well in that with my shield spec i do not take alot of damage, i hold all the aggro and the other party members are also set to hit what i am on, provided of course the other conditions are not in play, Leanni guarding Wynne.

It just then become a matter of reducing the numbers as fast as possible, like i will attack the normal mobs first even though there is a elite in the fight.

I will say that Sten is someone who you're only going to learn a limited amount about if you don't actually take him with you in the active party. Unlike other party members, he doesn't divulge a lot of information about the Qunari when asked directly. What happens instead is that, while adventuring around the world, he will comment on things he sees and mention certain things when bantering with other party members -- and THEN you can ask him about those things later, but only then.

This doesn't mean you can't talk to him about other things, but this is the only way you're going to get him to talk about the Qunari specifically.

Gah!

You know you've basically just made it so I HAVE to set up a party just to figure out Sten now, right?

I blame you for the extra playthroughs!

I've noticed that, very interesting how that works, seems more natural too, especially with the stoic/buddhist like Sten.

I especially like when he asks why leliana is trying to be like a man! That was a great conversation.

But I agree with wanting to know more about the Qunari, can't wait to get to know all he has to say.

Thats kinda the thing, he's unlike any of the other characters, you need to get him to respect you before he will start to answer you, and even then, figuring out what exactly he said is always a challenge, and sometimes it takes me several hours, and a few quests later before I really catch what he's said.

And then when you FINALLY think you've got him understood, he pulls the rug out again, and does something competlely unexpected, but that ends up tying quite well into his overall character once you've figured out the why's of this new side of him, he's not like the others at all, where you know exactly how to get approval, or how to make them happy, sometimes he'll be glad you did something, then if you do it again, but in a ever so slightly different way, he'll claim that was done without honor, and you'll lose like 10 approval points, much to your dismay.

Like, with Alistar and Morrigan, they are simple characters, you want to get Alistar to like you? Be empathic, show sympathy when he talks about Duncan or his parents, be a friend, help him out, compliment him alot, with Morrigan? Just hate everything, ignore those who need help, talk about how stupid the rest of your party is, etc.

Sten? You've got to show him you understand what duty really means, what honor really means, and then stick to it, in one of the conversations I had with him, he told me he disagreed with me about what really needed to be done, but that I "stuck with my honor" and thus he respected me more, rather then just trying to agree with him, and his points, it ended up getting me 5 or so points.

Ha, yeah, it's very smart@ss to people with western sensibilites I guess, but also, it seems very zen-buddhist-like in its own right.. I wonder if that was on purpose.
There is a zen saying that goes something like...
A man saw another man standing on a hill for a long time, walked up to him and asked "what are you doing?"
The man replied, "I am standing."

He just said what is, and answered the question asked, not implied... Sten is like that I think.
He's either very wise, or has no concept of "implied", haha.

I was going to use him as a temp until I got Shale, but he is so interesting and good on offense that I am thinking Shale will have to wait for playthrough 2.

I also really like Sten but is there any reason why he doesnt get a specialization at level 7? I mean, that makes him strictly worse then Ogrhen(sp)

You can get Sten a specialization, if you wish, once you have it unlocked and he is otherwise eligible. In fact, considering that Sten is the only party members who *doesn't* start with a specialization, he's probably the only one who can do so at level 7.

I like having him in my party for battles, but I really dislike him overall right now. Mainly because he tried to take over command of my party and attacked me, but I put him in his place, lol. I really like having this sort of conflict in the game, though. Yet another factor that adds to the deep well of replayability in Dragon Age.

I have stuggled getting Sten's approval. He actually really pisses me off so I gave up on him. I will try to explore his character next time. I was wondering if you can unlock any side quests for Sten dialog.

As far as I've experienced, Sten doesn't get a point at level seven at all.
