He missed 4 attribute points and one specialization point (at level 7 - he gets one with level 14, though).
Tad annoying to be honest.

Pretty much the reason I will never use him.

But the dog and Shale are firm favourites, some of the comments and the chicken scene had me in stitches. All the rest are whiny or just ignorant tools.

Sten is ... okay, I guess. A bit too hard to crack, I don't like it when I feel interaction with an NPC is all one-sided with my character the active/interested and the other the utterly passive/disinterested party. Sadly, DA falls squarely into that old trap again except with Wynne, and Sten makes you "work" extra hard. It does suit him, no doubt, but it is a tad tiresome. Still, I may fit him into one of my "alts'" playthroughs once I can muster the energy to restart.
What specialization would you consider the most IC for him? I'm leaning towards Champion. Can't picture him as a Berserker or Reaver at all. Templar, maybe, but Champion strikes me as the most fitting for his background.

As far as I've experienced, Sten doesn't get a point at level seven at all.
Yeah, this is a bug. He was supposed to get a point at level 7 and didn't because all the other followers come with that point already.

Personally I would've pegged him as a Berserker given his tendency to panick and slaughter entire families in a blind rage...

If that's how we worked out specializations, then Loghain's would have to have been "Strategic Retreater," the PC and Alistair would automatically earn, "Rescued by Crazy Old Ladies" specialization after Ostagar, and Oghren's would have been, "Divorcee."

OK; so here´s the question Mr. Gaider:David Gaider wrote...
I will say that Sten is someone who you're only going to learn a limited amount about if you don't actually take him with you in the active party. Unlike other party members, he doesn't divulge a lot of information about the Qunari when asked directly. What happens instead is that, while adventuring around the world, he will comment on things he sees and mention certain things when bantering with other party members -- and THEN you can ask him about those things later, but only then.
This doesn't mean you can't talk to him about other things, but this is the only way you're going to get him to talk about the Qunari specifically.
Sten has mentioned a lot of things with my other companions while playing such as his remarks to Morrigan about her flirting to him; Leliana calling him "softie", the growling between him and the dog, his definition about the urn as a "trashcan"... And I never got the chance to ask him about any topic of those when I talk to him in camp or somewhere else.
Is this bugged or the way it is supposed to be? I mean, I would looooove to get to know his real name after Zev comments about Sten being a rank, not a person´s name (or otherwise in the dream part of the Fade). Of course I´d expect him to tell me a simple "no" followed by "I will not tell that even to the Arishok" or something like that, but in the end, it is an aswer, not the one I wanted, but an answer.

Delicious Bioware burn, I must sample some of this.

Sten doesn't really agree with my usual playstyle at all. He's basically a male version of Morrigan, constantly nagging at the choices I make and trying to pick away at the warm, fuzzy feeling I get for doing good things. That's why he usually gets to stay at camp and watch pretty paintings.

There are specific comments he makes that open up new dialogue with Sten. Usually, they aren't banters with another NPC, they're just single remarks he makes as you're wandering around.
Since this is the spoiler forum:
One of them always occurs near a chantry.
One of them is in the Brecilian Forest.
One of them is in the Denerim market (it's extremely tricky to get this one, actually. )
One of them is at the Circle Tower.

I think there's one more I found, but I can't remember what it was. I have to find if there are any more... I want to find all the Sten triggers. I'm quite fond of him, really. Personality-wise, he may be my favorite character. However, as said, the missing specialization (and I believe missing attribute points) make him one of the worst characters gameplay-wise in the game... and as Oghran is set up to be the same, there's really no reason to take him instead of the dwarf save for liking his personality. That's not a bad thing, but I wish it was a bit more even.

On the other hand, Sten is among my faves; to me he´s like the embodiment of the Philosopher pointed out by Plato: he has seen the world as it is, he has seen the light of the ideas and he´s unable to understand why the rest of the beings are so blind.
As DLC propposal, I´d love new specializations for every cathegory, stuff like "marskman" for rogue, or Beereshad for warrior (a basicaly opposite class to berserker).

Gah now i'm curious. What is this one about? I just wonder if i got it... i didn't take Sten to the tower so probably missed out on whatever he says there. Though we did have some discussion about the magic and its uses so wonder if maybe i got that one somehow too...Mary Kirby wrote...

Sten is by far my favorite character in this game. I admit that no matter what type of character I'm playing I always have him join my crew and work on his approval. My latest playthrough is actually the first one where I haven't taken him with me though =/ I miss his banter heh.
Same here, I cant believe how I misjudged him so quickly, first time thru Lothering..
He just looked like some crazy murder in a cage, books n covers
Because I brought DA on a whim... it didnt sound like my kind of game, when i read the old forums few years back, thus i didnt keep up to date on information/spoilers etc^
Im so glad, i was completely wrong, heh for record I brought BG1 this way too (on a whim).
Back to Sten, hes my preference for a tank everytime now.. not only because I seem to mold with him, gaining 80% approval very early game, his whole warrior aspect is very interesting. Amusing banters with Leliana/Morrigan after he warms up.
I hate to leave him behind for Circle tower quest tho.. no room with wynn locked

Really? I would've labelled Oghren as a "Pervert" specialisation.
Hell he just said "Hot" and gained 2 rep when i kissed Bella after the Redcliffe battle
I knew Sten was missing a Spec point but... missing 4 attributes i didn't realise. Surely its a pretty simple fix though? Just give him a Spec point by default?

I never used Sten but I did drag various companion combos across various banter triggers and that unlocked the option to talk to him about magic/mages (after one of his banters with Wynne) and the Tal Vashoth (spelling?, from a Zevran banter). I suppose the one you can get with Wynne is the same that would be triggered at the Tower?
(Regarding conversation triggers: do they stop working for a given companion combo after a few times? I never got the sex talk between Sten and Morrigan for example, nor Leliana calling him a softie.)
