Sten

But since this is a Sten thread I will say Sten is my favorite character in game.
Sten is a very serious person. The strange but effective philosophy of Qun made he a bit hard to understand at first. He is also a downright straightforward person, easily reasonable, and has a kind heart. But. really, who thought he has a sweet tooth.

did i miss it, or is there actually no better explanation?

There's no other/better explanation for his behaviour. It should be kept in mind the "panic" he experiences is similar to what one would probably feel if they woke up and found themselves missing an entire leg and all their IDs, or something along these lines. And Sten himself didn't think it could justify his reaction, that's why he turned himself in and was willing to accept whatever punishment awaited him.taliefer wrote...

"After being mislead about the availability of cake, Sten flew into a rampage and massacred everyone present at the royal palace. With the Bannorn in ruins, the leader of the Antaam was asked as to whether this was all preplanned as a prelude to invade Ferelden, to which he replied 'No.'"

Eh, no, I'm pretty pleased it doesn't work like that with everyone in a game that only allows you to go around with three party members at a time. The "treats" system may be unrealistic... but if it's a choice between that or being unable to open up certain party members because the game is forcing me to only take three people at a time? Yeah, I'll go with the treats.AgenTBC wrote...
The characters all have interesting stories, but Sten is the only one whose interaction with the PC is done correctly. It's GREAT that you need him in your party in order to unlock a lot of his dialogue options and can't just stick him camp and shove treats in his face to get him to treat you like a soulmate.
They should all be that way. Not in your party? Good luck getting them to trust you. Too bad it doesn't actually work like that for the rest of the NPCs.
If we could drag around five party members with us, however, things would be different.

he is useless in a fight
Pretty much. I've only kept him because I got Ohgren so much later. He's incredibly boring, loves to kill everything at first sight, and thinks everyone else around him is garbage. If I had ANY other choice of characters as melee when I found him, in hindsight I would pick them instead of Sten.

I will say that Sten is someone who you're only going to learn a limited amount about if you don't actually take him with you in the active party. Unlike other party members, he doesn't divulge a lot of information about the Qunari when asked directly. What happens instead is that, while adventuring around the world, he will comment on things he sees and mention certain things when bantering with other party members -- and THEN you can ask him about those things later, but only then.
This doesn't mean you can't talk to him about other things, but this is the only way you're going to get him to talk about the Qunari specifically.
That's a waste that Sten is the only who has this option, I would've loved to ask my others companions their point of view during the main quest specially Zevran, I know he care for other elves too because he like you more when you save one of them.

Sten: (Sigh) Leliana, what do you want from me?
Leliana: Nothing! I'm just curious. There's a lot we don't know about you, Sten. ...Except that you're a big softie.
Sten: Please stop saying that.
Leliana: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make fun of you. There's nothing wrong with having a heart, Sten. It's just not what I expected.
Sten: Why?
Leliana: You're so qunari! All the stories speak as if you were a hurricane or an earthquake rather than people.
Sten: Qunari are most dangerous because we are thinking men and not unthinking force.
Leliana: I don't understand. What do you mean?
Sten: For your sake, I hope you never find out.

OK; so here´s the question Mr. Gaider:
Sten has mentioned a lot of things with my other companions while playing such as his remarks to Morrigan about her flirting to him; Leliana calling him "softie", the growling between him and the dog, his definition about the urn as a "trashcan"... And I never got the chance to ask him about any topic of those when I talk to him in camp or somewhere else.
Is this bugged or the way it is supposed to be?
There are specific comments he makes that open up new dialogue with Sten. Usually, they aren't banters with another NPC, they're just single remarks he makes as you're wandering around.
Since this is the spoiler forum:
One of them always occurs near a chantry.
One of them is in the Brecilian Forest.
One of them is in the Denerim market (it's extremely tricky to get this one, actually. )
One of them is at the Circle Tower.
I've found a couple of these and some time it seems that one of my other companions makes some comment at these place instead of Sten. I'm wondering if I return to the Circle tower or to the Brecilian Forest would I be able to get Sten to say them or do each of the triggers only work once for one companion and then they are gone?

I don't know if that's the case with Sten's dialogues. Hope not.

And the city elf murders their entire way through an estate to kill a nobleman's only son and his two friends, the noble dwarf murders their brother, the commoner dwarf is a petty criminal...taliefer wrote...
he is an interesting character...but he does, apparently, get away with murder, and the murder of an entire family. that helped him, and apparently saved his life. an entire family! i kept waiting for some kind of side quest, or dialog option to find out that he didnt actually do it, or some kind of better explanation than "panic".
did i miss it, or is there actually no better explanation?
Zevran's an assassin
Leliana's a spy that makes no secret of the fact she's killed too; and can say she enjoys the thrill of the hunt
Morrignan? Apostate (I personally don't care, but hey)
Wynne is arguable an abomination
You get the idea.

These are "companion barks"; in these spots generally everyone has one and there's a chance they'll be picked to say theirs. They're separate from dialogue openers, though.anaea123 wrote...
I've noticed a "first time description" trigger that changes depending on who you have with you. For instance, heading to Lake Calenhad for the first time, if Alistair's in your party he'll say something about the impracticality if building a tower in a lake. If Morrigan's in your party she'll say something about the shape of the tower. Bringing either to the Lake a second or third time doesn't seem to trigger the conversation.
I don't know if that's the case with Sten's dialogues. Hope not.
Oh and apparently that hard to get Sten dialogue opener in the market triggers (or at least is supposed to) when Sten sees human children for the first time.

The difference with Sten and Morrigan is you can usually persuade Sten to see things your way, to which you'll at least get a "mrmhrm.. fine ifyousayso.." response whereas Morrigan is always "saving kittens is bad! I disapprove -50!" no matter what.
What I love about this is that when you finally run across a cat, Morrigan approves of you helping it. Well, the demon inside, but still, Morrigan approves of helping Kitty.

Who are a bunch of thugs and rapists, the guards are criminals.

Not necesarilly.
the commoner dwarf is a petty criminal...
Which is clearly the equal of a mass murderer.
