Well, that's hardly surprising given that the Brecilian Forest weres were created from the curse. I believe it mentions elsewhere that normally weres are caused by spirits/demons possessing wolves. Not to say that's what these are - they may be something completely different.

So, not demons I take it. Then I presume it has to do with the taint, as I've seen them mentioned as "blight werewolves".

But they are still grey/brown/black bipedal wolf-thingies, right?

Rule 35: Read the effin' codex.

Ferelden Lore states that the first "King" of Ferelden, before Teryns, before Banns, was descended from a werewolf. Some werewolves are indeed sentient without complete blood/vengeanceagainstsociety-thirst. Indeed, this first King, who's name I forget, was dog-like, hairier, and brawnier. And this descendence -from- werewolves is why Fereldens have such an affinity for dogs.

Now, granted, any werewolf you find will still be a barbaric, bloodthirsty, angry bastard (though that would be -so- boring), but a werewolf companion is -very- feasible if you can get past all the townsfolk trying to burn him/skewer him.

Now, I, personally, am not looking for a blood-hungry, evil werewolf. If I could have my way, it would go something like this...

You come across a scene of bloodshed and gore, Darkspawn ripped in twain, skewered on the branches of trees, and gurgling in death. Three sit together, their backs against a tree, their heads in a neat pile, beside them. As you continue on, the swathe of bloodied Darkspawn continues, until you find a clearing, in the middle of which stands a blood-spattered werewolf, digging about in the guts of a Hurlock. Your group approaches, magic, swords, and arrows ready.

The werewolf stands and turns around, baring its teeth in a snarl, before it's eyes widen and it relaxes.

"Oh, please do forgive me. Thought you were more of these Darkspawn fellows here. Believed I had to give -more- of them a good thrashing, what-what, eh?" He laughs, the proper and polite werewolf beginning to wipe at the blood. "I so do detest how messy this work can get sometimes, though. But, I knew "saving Blackmarsh" wasn't the cleanest business when I got into it anyway, hmm? Rather sticky though... Don't mind it." He offers a hand and you stand there... perplexed.

Much more awesome than any ravenous, man-eating werewolf. And a twist. M. Night Shamylamalamalamalan would agree, no?

New werewolves are interesting really. I liked Dalish story arc but I was kinda sad after I find out if you wont cure them you have to slay them or side with them just to see they cannot control their lust for blood and be hunted all over Ferelden.

I would like to see a wise, self controlled Werewolf as a companion. I know I am asking much but they are much wiser then others think.

Heck even mindless darkspawn have an Evil Genius named ''The Architect'' why cant Werewolves ?

Maybe we can see one for later games of the series.

Presentdent makes a great point though he makes his wolf sound like Zev. Personally i would like a bloodthirsty wolf still hardcore but looking for redemption.

I am not looking for a mindless killing machine. I am do more than my share of it as an elven mage without anyone or anything else's help, lol. I would rather have a mannered beast that ravages only the likes of evil... well, and torch bearing villagers.

It would be cool to see a decendent of the the old king that was a werewolf. There could be a hidden werewolf castle that will try to be recognized as nobles due to their lineage to the old king... so that they would no longer be hunted in Ferelden.

As for armor, I think it would be just easier to do Mabari type things with warpaint and collars. I like to leash my werewolves... mwuahahaha...

Uhh... Maybe?

Call me skeptical, but having something as drastic as a werewolf for a companion would sort of be front-page material, no? Bioware could very well be saving such a thing for last, but in truth, how many curses pertain to such a thing anyway? In my understanding the way those people were transformed was exceptionally complex in comparison to something like demon possession. I doubt there are more werewolves than what was seen in the Brecillian Forest.

I'd take a guess that we'd have more of a chance at having some possessed corpse like Sophia Dryden as an ally before we get anything like a werewolf. Both equally intriguing, and highly unlikely.

Well we had Legion in Mass effect 2 and Bioware never came out and said he would be a squad mate so yes I think if we could have a Geth in Mass effect 2 we could have a Werewof, hell we might even get a Darkspawn who wants to fight the blight on our team.

I can't help but feel this has been done before and would feel very cheesy. Plus M. Night is a d***, I'm normally a nice guy, but I would laugh if he bled out from getting his balls ripped off by a giant centipede.

I werewolf companion would rock. They wouldn't need an armor. They could behave just like shapeshifting mages. Once transformed, their armor would disappear and would only show again once the character resumed his/hers human appearance.

The werewolves looked awful in Origins- seriously. Two things visually annoyed me, the trees like the ones at Ostagar, and the werewolves. Seriously, they looked like they were right out of a PS2 game. (The artstyle was fine I guess, just how it turned out...was rather poor)

Info on Werewolves
Codex: Creatures - Werewolf

"And Dane he stood his ground,
The fanged beast approached.
He saw the rage within its eyes,
The wolf that once was there.
The sword he raised,
Merciful death be praised,
To the maker went his prayer."
--From the popular telling of Dane and the Werewolf, a legend of Ferelden circa 4:50 Black.

Fereldan lore is full of instances where these creatures have plaguedthe countryside: wolves possessed by rage demons and transformed into humanoid monsters with incredible speed and strength, able to spread a curse to those they bit that would drive them mad with unthinking fury. When in this enraged state, a human host can likewise become possessed and be transformed into a feral, wolf-like beast. Tales differ on these werewolves of human origin, some claiming that their transformation into a bestial form happens uncontrollably. Some claim the transformation is irreversible. As is often the case with demonic tales, both versions were most likely true at some point.

The ability of normal dogs to detect a werewolf even when it is in a human guise is what first led Fereldans to adopt dogs as indispensable companions in every farmhold. The alliance between humans and regular wolves is the subject of the popular Fereldan folk tale "Dane and the Werewolf."

The actual hero Dane led a crusade to eliminate the werewolf threat during the early Black Age, and while werewolves have never assumed the same prominence since, there have still been reports of individual packs lurking in remote forests. In recent years, some have even been reported to have developed an uncanny willpower and intelligence... though why this is so is still unknown.

Codex: Culture and History - Dogs in Ferelden

I am frequently asked, during my travels in other lands, to explain the dogs omnipresent in Ferelden. Inevitably, I tell my foreign questioners that there are no more dogs in my homeland than in their own. In every civilized corner of Thedas, an astute observer will notice dogs employed in hunting game, keeping barns and storehouses free of vermin, herding livestock, guarding homes, and even used as beasts of burden in the mountains. It is simply that Fereldans show appreciation for the work that our dogs do. And perhaps the reason for that is tangled up in mythology.

Hafter, the first man to be named teyrn, the hero who united our Alamarri ancestors to drive back the darkspawn of the second Blight, was reputed to be the son of a werewolf. Now, perhaps this was meant to be some comment on his temperament, or simply a way of making a great man even larger than life. But more thanhalf the noble families of Ferelden claim to be descendants of Hafter, and consequently, many of our people believe they have some distant kinship with wolves. It is only good manners to be polite to one's kin.

Codex: Culture and History - The Korcari Wilds
It is said that in the midst of the Black Age, when werewolves stalked the lands of Ferelden in numbers that kept every farmholder indoors and a hound on every doorstep, a powerful arl of the Alamarri peoples stood and declared that he would put an end to the threat. His arling stood on the border of the dark forest on the southern border of the Ferelden Valley, and he claimed that the werewolves used the forest to launch their midnight assaults on humanity.

For 20 years, this arl led an army of warriors and hounds deep into the forest. In his hunt for thewerewolves, he slew not only every wolf he came upon, but also every member of the Chasind wilder folk. Any one of them, he said, could harbor a demon inside and thus be a werewolf in disguise. For 20 years, the forest rang with screams and the rivers ran red.

The tales say that an old Chasind woman found her sons all dead at the arl's blades. She pulled one of those very blades from one son's heart and plunged it into her own chest, cursing the arl's name as she did so.
Where her blood touched the ground, a mist began to rise. It spread and spread until it was everywhere in the forest. The arl's army became lost, and it is said that they died there. Others say they wander still. The ruins of his arling stand to this day, filled with the ghosts of women waiting eternally for their husbands to return.

The forest of the legend is, of course, the Korcari Wilds. There are as many legends about the great southern forest as there are shadows, or so the saying goes. The Chasind wilder folk have made their home there since
mankind first came to these lands, and the wildlands spread as far into the south as anyone has ventured. Beyond the mists are vast tracts of snow, white-capped mountains, and entire fields of ice. It is a land too
cold for mankind to survive, yet the Chasind eke out an existence even there, and they tell of horrors beyond the Wilds that the lowland folk could not begin to comprehend.

To most, Ferelden simply ends with the Korcari Wilds: There is nothing beyond. The Wilds is a land of great trees, wet marshes and dangerous monsters. What more need be said?

Codex: Books and Songs - Dane and the Werewolf
Let me sing of heroes and honor lost and found.
Of monsters and men in all forms,
Of Dane, hunter without peer,
Feared by the forests of Ferelden,
Who one autumn morn spied
A hart of pure white in beam of warmest sun,
A prize for huntsman's spear.
Through the greenwood they ran, hart and hunter
Bringing the stag to spear at last in a long-forgotten grove,
Heedless that the chase had waked a hunger in the golden wood,
A werewolf, a creature with mind of man,
Lured by the hunt and come forth to lay claim
To the hart as rightful tribute
Drawn by the scent of cooling blood.

In the silence the two hunters held.
Dane, spear-armed against the wolf with all his brood,
Knew with sinking heart he was lost
Steeled for the winding roads of the Fade
Then the beast spoke, human-like in voice,

"You have taken this stag from my woods, and my pack
But nothing comes without a cost."
The wolf pack circled, ever closer, and he
Who felled boars and bears with his bright blade
Knew fear. They spoke his name in roars
Like gravestones, offering a beast's bargain.
"Die here, huntsman, alone
And forgotten, or take my place amongst the wolves
As I take your place amongst men."

Thus a bargain struck,
And Dane the wolf pack served in wolfen form,
And the werewolf to his family sped, as Dane,
One year and a day all told.
But some things cannot be repent,
Some coinage cannot be unspent,
When hearts are wagered, a fissure rent.

-- From the saga Dane and the Werewolf, as recorded by
the minstrel Uccam, 4:85 Black.

I don't think there are going to be any werewolf companions, judging on the fact that the only way their rabid state could be calmed in Origins was by the presence of a spirit as powerful as the Lady. Then again, we have some wacked out darkspawn cult that possesses higher though process, so anything is possible.

Since I found out Justice is essentially a zombie... that fills the quota for the wierd character, so I highly doubt any sort of creature ally in Awakening... hopefully demand for dog back will lead to creature allies in another expansion *crosses*

I still wonder who the unrevealed ally is... maybe a Disciple or half-turned Gray Warden that will switch sides to help you fight the Architect at the end

It's Nathaniel Howe. The guy from the Penny Arcade comics that everyone's been talking about for awhile now.

They're apparently dragging out releasing him almost until the release day.

The archer shadow from the Penny Arcade thing right? I do believe there is yet another character nobody has seen yet. There is a slot extra potentially.

Yes. Him. There's only one slot left on the website. There might be a secret character, but we've seen no hints at it yet.

You know, Justice is a spirit that posessed Kristoff, making the spirit-possessing-dog idea not all that far-fetched (maybe on accident?). Also, the part about people wanting to kill him..... Shale's pretty scary, as is Sten, the way he holds that huge two-handed meat cleaver of his. Also, I think if the people saw a werewolf walking up straight (with werewolf clothes maybe O.o) WITH a Grey Warden, and not insane, they would trust he's alright. Just saying - they didn't seem to question Shale. :P

I wish there was a good shapeshifting mod to allow werewolf form or turn Dog into a Werewolf.

Origenaly I heard one of the ideas was to have Hawke be a Lycanthrope in DragoN Age 2 but that was scrapped. It would certainly be nice and is often fan begged feature that only happened in Morrowind.

Werewolf companion would have been intresting or a companion that has the option to turning into one.

I was very dissappointed when, if you choose to kill the Dalish, there is virtually noone to talk to and no characters in the Dalish Werewolf camp. I would have thought there would at least be Swiftrunner, the Lady of the Forest, and maybe a trader-werewolf who trades artificial werewolf swords made out of hardened werewolf dung or something. But it kinda sucked. no offense....

I suggest using some mods.
Wolf Shop adds a Werewolf Shopkeepersocial.bioware.com/project/1963/

I personaly would like a mod that changes Dog into a Werewolf and keep the ability to pee on stuff and search for items etc.
