Perhaps I watch too much
Japanese anime for my own good, but heck, when I was making my Shepard character, I was actually looking for waist-length hairstyles, but find the longest hairstyle can pick is to shoulders, no more than that...and that "ponny tail" style looks like pig tail if you ask me, too short.

So call me whatever you want, but is there any long hair built into the databaseat all, if there is, is there any way to get them? I really want waist-length hairstyle...

Join the military.
See how long you keep 'waist length' hair.

One could say the shoulder length hair option for the female shepard is almost over the limit.

That is all.

Good point there, and I know that all too well, since I did my conscription 10 years back.

But Cerberus ain't military, and perhaps a bit of freedom can be afforded during the re-construction, y'know.

I'm pretty sure that the unreal engine doesn't support the physics of long flowing hair too well if well at all. The hair in ME2 is actually quite an improvement over ME1's more plastic looking hair, but it still has limitations (don't quote me on that).

Long hair is out of style due to the Unreal Engine not having any cloth or flex mechanics.

Cerebus isn't miltary, yes.  Shepard was, and has been dead for 2 years.  Maybe they didn't have enough money in budget for hair extensions.

I honestly hate all of the hair options for the fem!Shepards. The male!Shepards are pretty godsawful too. Longer hair might be nice but I have to agree that it's not too practical for combat.

The comment about the game engine got me thinking though. If there were more flex/cloth mechanics support when the game first came out, would asari have longer hair-tentacles?

If you think about it, actually Shepard shouldn't have long hair at all. She/he spent two years dead (nearly). Hair *ahem* doesn't grow when one is dead. Soooooo... realistically, Shepard should have quite short hair, considering the small amount of time he/she has been alive to actually regrow hair.

And also, Bee-Dubya's claims that Shepard is a military-type and thus would not have long hair is quite reasonable to me. I don't mind the short styles/buns. Besides, long hair would just be distracting. I know if I was in battle, tossing enemies with biotics or casting incinerate or even sniping someone, I wouldn't want to have long hair bothering me. And I'm a woman who proudly wears her hair long and loose.

Jentha and Nef in-game have the coolest hair by far. Sadly those styles are only acquirable on the PC, 360 users are out of luck D:

"Wierd" is an understatement.

Yes, Cerberus isn't military. But the short haircuts of the military isn't some arbitrary decision they suddenly came up with one day out of the blue. Running around with long hair in combat situations is pants-on-head retarded.

That a military man like Shepard should suddenly become a hippie just because restrictions are lifted (if they were ever there) is unlikely, to say the least. Many militaries in the world have no restrictions on hair, but most everyone cuts their hair short because long hair is simply in the way.

Now take the "hair is simply in the way" argument into the world of environmentally sealed combat armour. Even if you have your long hair in a regulation bun (like Ash does in ME1), if your hair falls out of the bun you have it in and down into your eyes, you have no way to move it. You have to just live (or die) with it..

I can easily see that soldiers (both men and women) who regulary wear sealed combat armour adopting very short hairstyles. My FemShep has a brushcut hair style, based on the idea that she spends a lot of time in armour.

*edited because I did not properly quote Varenus Luckmann.

This.

Except that last line.  I assume most militaries have restrictions on hair.  I know the US does, and the only nation that I can think of that doesn't place restrictions on hair (for males, females have restrictions, they're just looser) is Israel, and thats for religious reasons.

I really don't want anime-hairstyles, but I would wish I could change the haircut for my imported Shep, mainly because the new one doesn't look like the old. The new hair is longer by 2-4 cm and I don't really like it. Guess I can't have it all...

Sweden too.

I even know people that have done service in dreads. They are complete morons, but they are apparently free to be morons in the military these days.

Edit: I do agree, however. I think most militaries have restrictions. I'm just saying that many don't.

I think long hair would be silly. Shepard is running around all over the place shooting people up. She's going to be less efficient at that if she has hair flying around in her face. Whether or not there are regulations with Cerberus, it'd be plain impractical.

Anyone ever tried to get waist length hair into a helmet while a breach in the hull decompresses the ship? Good luck surviving that.

They barely have many decent short hair options.

The simple answer is, long hair is difficult to model well. Low-res "cartoony" models can get away with it easier. Something like WoW. But high res life-like hair is much harder. the short hair in the game is stiff and never moves. but it doesn't break the uncanny valley, or nor do you really question it, because its short. But if you had long, waist length hair, and it didn't ever move. When running, jumping, etc, it would look really bizarre.

They should have longer hair models imo, not that i would want one myself but for those who want.

Dont see any logical reason not to have it, although MOST people in this and that situation would not go with long hair dont mean that SOME would not do it. There will always be exceptions to a general rule, take professional fighters for instance, there is absolutly no logic in having long hair if your gonne fight and it will get sweaty and fall down in your face, people can grab it etc, you still see people with long hair in for instance mma or various no rules fighting. Because YOU dont think it makes sense dont mean there wont be someone out there that will do it. for whatever reasons they have.
