I'm assuming this is an engine problem, since I have the exact same problem in ME1, but not with any other games.

My sound is exactly as I want it, everywhere in the game EXCEPT in conversations. As soon as I enter a conversation, volume drops to zero, and stays there until I exit the conversation, at which point it returns to the volume I had set in options.

My sound card is a SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio (Driver is P17xfi.sys [5.12.1.621]). I'm running XP Pro/SP3, with DirectX 9.0c (March 2009). Is there a way to work around this volume problem?

==============EDIT FOR WORKAROUND===============

To get the conversation volume to match the volume of the rest of the game, reset the sound card so ONLY use 2/2.1 speakers, or to use headphone mode. If you try to use 4 or more speakers, it WILL frak your volume, guaranteed.

Here's hoping the devs fix this, as full surround sound would be a nice bonus in a game like this.

Note: this problem has remained consistent, across 4 different computers, three different versions of Windows, and all three versions of Mass Effect.

Thank goodness my workaround has also continued to work.
