Miranda, Kaidan, or Ashley.  Garrus is too oh whoe is me, and while I love Tali she still has a lot to learn before getting to that position. I don't see anyone else. *shrug*  Jacob lacks discipline and a sense of loyalty.

edit: Kaidan or Ash IF you can get them in ME3, or dlc? ^_~

How is Jacob disloyal? You pulled that one out of your ass.

"Garrus is too oh whoe is me" what?? LMAO :D:D:D
Care to explain what makes you see him this way?

Apparently, guilt is a bad thing.

Not that Miranda is all "woe is me, I'm such a disadvantaged daddy's girl" or anything.

If Shepard is away, Tali is one of the LAST people you'd want leading things.

If I got to pick, I probably would pick Garrus, or heck, just stay with Miranda.

Garrus has some leading experience, and his time in the turian millitary probably showed him something about leading a ship, so he'd be an okay choice, but Miranda has been running cerberus missions for a heck of a long time, and since mostly everyone on the ship are cerberus operatives, she'd probably command more respect than Garrus would.

Miranda, TIM made the right choice.
Extremely capable XO, loyal to Shep and the Normandy.

Love and romance is one thing, but she really is a very valuable officer. Tali is a great tech, but has no desire to lead people, unlike Miranda. She actuality enjoys handling all the stuff others couldn't, like logistics, finance and intelligence.

Garus is a great squad leader, in combat. You can't beat up the maintanance bills.

I don't know why so many would pick Tali as XO? She should be your chief engineer, like Adams in the first game.

Huh. No wonder so many people have characters die on the suicide mission.

How very eloquent of you.. He lacks loyalty quite simply because he jumps away from the Alliance because he disagrees with them then joins Cerberus an organisation he knows and has seen himself how they operate is questionable. He doesn't like Cerberus any more then the Alliance but for now their goals align.

Not someone I'd want to count on as my second. slightly too fickle. Miranda on the other hand shows very strong loyalty, no matter it it's misplaced.

Well said. ;)

Yeah, Tali kinda takes over Chief Engineer position anyhow, even your engineers let her run the business. That's quarian machinists for ya.
Give them some scrap metal and some Eezo and they'll have it making precision jumps in an hour.

Doesn't affect her mission. Same with Jacob and anyone else. Garrus though takes things pretty hard. IMO of course. ;)

I personally think they all make a terrible XO. This is a spaceship, not a ops team or a combat squad. Even Miranda is more of an administrator and operations commander on the field. Making her still a good Sqaud leader but not the best at a starship. At least she has some skills there. Garrus is Turian trained and also a good ground based leader. I am sure Turian training includes vessel operations, probably more so than Miranda in this case.

Tali is an engineer, simple. Doesn't mean you can't listen to her advice, but XO.. that is a little much. I love the girl, I am not gonna put her where she doesn't belong. Samara has the same problems. She might have experience of age, but she is a Justicar, she even admits herself she does not have a lot of experience working through others. Never mind leading a ship. She makes a good advisor perhaps, but that is not what and XO is.

That is why I think EDI is a possible candidate, she might be an AI but she knows the ship. Garrus is a good candidate, and Miranda is acceptable. The problem I have with EDI is, can she coordinate the people on the ship? Probably why in the end I will go with Garrus.

People need to remember an XO is someone that leads in absentia to the commander. So they are not an advisor, but a commander.

Edit - I forgot Jacob, he seems more like a marine or groundpounder to me. Like a fireteam leader, leading a small squad. He and Miranda would make a good Squad Leader if Shepard chooses to retire from going down to the planet and just sitting in the CiC room all day.

Tali is a poor choice for XO currently. She does not have enough command experience. She is and has always been the engineer.

Garrus is a good choice but not someone who I like. He rides the edge too much and I need someone who will be willing to pull me back not someone who would dive over before I did.

Kaiden is a douche and probably would not join back up with you. Thank god. He died in every plathrough of my original Mass Effect.

Ashley is getting the command experience but is bitter. The trust levels are at an all time low.

Liara is actually a good choice. Being alone for 2 years has given her an edge that did not exist originally. She could make the command decisions and pull you back when you go too far.

Wrex is not going to step down from his leadership role to follow you.

Zaaed has the experience but I would trust Saren more.

Legion is too much of an unknown quantity and would not inspire the crew.

Samara would be a cold and cruelly efficient XO. The trouble would be wether or not she could leave being a justicar.

Miranda makes an okay XO and is the reason Jacob will never be XO on a ship with her. He naturally defers to her.

Thane is too morose. Also so much of a loner that leading other is probably not his forte.

Grunt is too inexperienced.

Mordin could do the job but it is not what he would be best at.

Jack is not a leader and she will crumble under the strain. She does not value others anywhere near enough.

Well i almost invariably play Paragon. So i'd go with Zaeed. He's the bad cop to my good cop.

He could be like the drill sergeant in Full Metal Jacket.

Though he might take a knife to someone's eye, so maybe Garrus would be a better pick

I completely understand.  I did not even like the voice actor as Carth Onasi from KOTOR.  He gives a very specific feel to a character and I just do not like it.

Excellent! I am male and I like Kaiden. He is like your buddy on the Normandy. Trusted friend. Having to choose between him and Ash was the hardest choice my Ashely LI Shepard had to do. Why do people hate him? Never got it. (Plus he is the voice of Carth from KotOR!)

I will gladly join the charge, even if I am male.

Space Batman for me as well, though I have no issues with Miranda, honestly,  Especially post-endgame, where she totally redeemed herself sticking it to the Man.

I suspect that characters like Carth and Kaidan trigger an alpha male response in some (*some*, not all) men and gets them riled up.

At least it seems to me that most anti-Kaidans are male. I'm sure some women hate him too for random reasons.

Since they have the same VA, hate for Carth transfers to hate for Kaidan too. I never got the complaints that Carth was whiny.. yeah.. he complained if you started acting like an ass and kicking people in the shins.. who wouldn't.

They really shouldn't have cut the darkside femRevan + Carth ending in KotOR, how badass is it that he sacrifices his life to stop the woman he loves from going down the path of evil? A shame.

Screw XO, what about Security Chief. I would put Grunt. One reason only, as soon as someone knows he is in charge of security.. everyone will behave.

You need a leader for that position, meaning Garrus

Tali knows nothing about leading a ship

She must have something, after all some of the Quarians are thinking of making her an Admiral.
