I suspect that characters like Carth and Kaidan trigger an alpha male response in some (*some*, not all) men and gets them riled up.
At least it seems to me that most anti-Kaidans are male. I'm sure some women hate him too for random reasons.
Since they have the same VA, hate for Carth transfers to hate for Kaidan too. I never got the complaints that Carth was whiny.. yeah.. he complained if you started acting like an ass and kicking people in the shins.. who wouldn't.

They really shouldn't have cut the darkside femRevan + Carth ending in KotOR, how badass is it that he sacrifices his life to stop the woman he loves from going down the path of evil? A shame.

I also found the sentinel class nigh on useless in the first ME game.  That really did not help for him being a valued member of my team.  He seems to be trying to be sympathetic and caring and it just did not work.  It makes Kaidan a jack of all trades who is not good at anything and needs help more then he can help.  I might have liked him more if he was slinging an assault rifle but I  doubt it.  I like Jacob much more in ME2.

What is it about Kaidan that makes you a fan girl?

Kaidan. In ME2, his rank has surpassed Shepard's old rank. I think he'd interact well with the crew and would be very fair in handing things.

- A sociopath who wants a personal army of robot slaves.
- An idiot who thought it'd be a good idea to network some Geth on his own ship
- A Geth apologist
- Loghain

He's smart, I like his looks, he had an interesting background, his romance didn't seem forced *cough*Jacob*cough*, I like Raphael Sbarge as an actor and I liked Carth

Point taken, none of the characters are actually what I would call fleet types, save Tali who has known little else. Frankly I think she needs more seasoning before leaving the engine room.

Garrus is loyal and has ship experience...but he is way too reckless. You need someone who will make a hard choice and be cool under fire about it.

Near as I can tell eveone else who has leadership ability has only had it in different applications. In other words if something happens to Shep that ship is doomed.

You mean like when Shep and everyone leave the ship at the Omega 4 Relay for the sake of plot convenience? 
On that regard, let's make Joker the XO. He and EDI saved the ship on their own.

I like how that one is not a described reason... just... "Loghain".

Excellent! I am male and I like Kaiden. He is like your buddy on the Normandy. Trusted friend. Having to choose between him and Ash was the hardest choice my Ashely LI Shepard had to do. Why do people hate him? Never got it. (Plus he is the voice of Carth from KotOR!)

I think Miranda is a good choice, provided nothing goes wrong, such as the ship getting into a combat situation. She is a smart women to be sure and has the loyaty of the crew, though I think her knoweldge is probably going to be mostly theoretical, not practical. She hasn't had the experience working on a military ship seeing how things work in the "real world".

My next choice, maybe  Garris, but  I can understand why Maranda was chosen, she is linked to Cerebus.

She's proved her loyalty enough to me that I wouldn't worry at all at the concept of putting the Normandy in her hands. I mean, who better to manage the Normandy than the Normandy herself?

EDI does have Reaper tech incorporated into its systems. It says so if you ask after the blocks are removed.
