The hats look equally silly on every origin.
It's possible that the dwarves refuse to have anything to do with magic because they don't want to be forced to wear the hats.

To add to this point, I have actually stopped wearing hats on my mage characters just because of this problem! The hats are just too ridiculous... even with the mod that takes them off when out of combat.

Basically you start a full level stronger geared towards a mage and will always be ahead.

In the long run I guess it could balance out, but as an Elf you always have 2 additional points in Willpower and 1 in Magic (humans get +1 Magic) no matter what. Plus you start off stronger for the beginning which really is the only harder part of the game when you are at your weakest overall.
Basically you start a full level stronger geared towards a mage and will always be ahead.
But after the fade section you end up with 17 cunning which is a wasted point for max coercion. Also AW's will appreciate the higher dex.

In all seriousness, it's pretty much an aesthetic choice.

Human, you won't catch me associating with damn knife-ears!

Ha Ha Ha,
I like it that elves are enslaved in this game. Was a first for me. Male elfs to me always seemed gender confused (especially in LotRO) and female elfs?.....well they make good bed warmers and sexual playtoys.

I have played one of each and there really isn't any difference except the aesthetics.
