So.... I got thinking about the DA:O soundtrack and the way its shaping up which then lead onto me thinking about other soundtracks from both movies and games including the old BG music, Lotr music and funnily enough the one Ive been listening to recently The Last Samurai soundtrack put together by Hans Zimmer, the way he mixes traditional western orchestra and traditional Japanese instruments gets me every time.

Anyone else want to add soundtracks that they think are particularly good, feel free to mention them here :)

While orchestra is fine, I especially hate it when composers repeatedly invoke the same instruments and styles, and opt for overblown drama in their tracks. After a while things become generic, and it becomes especially hard to distinguish one sound from another (or composer from another - from Hans Zimmer to Danny Elfman to Harry Gregson-Williams, etc). It's sad to think that one could actually get bored by orchestral instrumentation, but it happened to me.

Then again, I'm partial to the soundtrack of "Spirited Away" by Joe Hisaishi. I haven't listened to all the tracks yet, but you can easily find them on Youtube, and he's received rave reviews. It's probably to do with how the composition is so versatile, and how he manages to capture shifting moods and the feel of the movie perfectly with a sense of the magical and suspenseful.
