It's just you, it's used when the enemies are in a closer range to you, it shreds shields incredibly fast. Does a good amount on Insanity too.

err

SMG = Submachine Gun

I dont know what a "small machine gun" isPosted Image

My mistake, although "small" can still carry the same connotation as the "sub-" prefix.

"sub-" used in submachine-gun indicates "lesser/inferior" which is due to it's size (barrel length, potential energy in the shells, projectile size, etc) and "small" used as the prefix can communicate something similar.

/shrug

Err ,nope Sub doesnt refer to the size but the caliber, because most of the are 9mm and a few .45.

The submachine gun(Uzzi, MP5) is the little brother of the light machine gun(SAW, M60), they dont really have anything to do with asault rifles(M16, AK47-74)

Are you Guys Serious, i'm playing on Insanity right now as a Sentinel starting from level 1 and it is just brutal. Every weapon I use on insanity just plain sucks lol, and no, I don't suck, I don't randomly shoot and miss the target, most of my shots are dead on headshots but enemies are just so tough.. I can't wait to get the tempest and unlock another weapon specialization on the collector ship.

guns alone on insanity will not cut it, you absolutely need to be using warp and overload as frequently as they cool down, and using your assault armor as soon as it breaks. insanity is extremely challenging if you don't use the warp and overload skills as every enemy you encounter will have shields, barriers and armor.

The Tempest is great. Too bad, that you get it on the same mission where you get the Geth pulse rifle, which is far superior.

Using the Shuriken right now on Insanity, and with disruptor rounds it is tearing these geth to shreads. ^_^

Haven't even tried the Tempest yet.

My infiltrator does not touch the SMG, but thats just an RP decision (she never uses rapid-fire weapons). For my Vanguard however, Tempest is essential in preparing enemies to be Charged.

The SMG is not meant to be stand alone assault weapon. It's primary function is to take down shields and barriers. Combined with the proper upgrades and ammo, the Tempest can be used in concert with other powers for devastating effect. In this manner you can take down the largest foes on any difficulty setting.

i cant stand the shuriken. tbh that thing should have been apart of the pistol class.

the tempest however is quite usable.

QFT, I love that thing.

Vanguards generally gain a disportionate advantage from SMGs as they tend to spend a lot of time at the SMG's optimal range. But it's a brilliant weapon.

Bullet for Bullet, the Shuriken is a lot stronger than the Tempest, but despite all that, the immense clip size of the Tempest is too much to turn away from :)

Most of the weapons they give you to start are pretty cruddy. It gives you a way to grow. It also discourages people from playing the game a straight shooter when using other than soldier classes.

this may be so, but the spread on the shuriken make it hard to qualify it as being a better weapon DPS wise.

basically the Tempest just hits its mark more reliably than the shuriken and therefore is a bit more dependable for dealing reliable damage. the fact that it can fire 50 shots before having to reload with a very high reserve just makes it "almost" broken in comparison.

of couse everything is based on range here. the farther you get with the SMGs the worse they perform. i would almost compare the Tempest to a small AR, but it just cant hold up to one at range.

First you say that "hurr my weapons suck and no I don't suck lol" and then you continue on to detail exactly why you suck.

Your weapons doesn't suck. All of us are using the same weapons. The only thing sucking here is you.

I can't recall how many times I've used the SMG over a CQE instead of a Geth Pulse Rifle, and lived.

Sub Machine Guns are called such because historically, the very first automatic weapons were large crew-served weapons (aka Heavy Machine Guns). The miniaturization of automatic weapons led to the development of the Light Machine Gun (manportable automatic weapons using rifle ammo), and then further reduced into the smaller Sub Machine Gun, which use smaller caliber rounds most often pistol ammo.

Hence, the term "Sub" does refer to the "inferiority" of this particular class of weapon in comparison to its larger brethren, since SMG's came last in the technological line.

You're correct in the semantic sense of course, but the proper term for the weapon is "Sub", not "Small".

As for SMG's in Mass Effect 2... as already mentioned, the SMG is not an end-all be-all weapon: It is meant to be used as a shield/barrier destroyer to allow the use of biotic or tech powers on a target. Do note that the classes armed with SMG's are the ones equipped with powerful biotic or tech powers. I do find SMG's very useful against hordes, particularly against Husks and Abominations provided you arm it with the right ammo type (Incendiary or AP ammo do wonders in this department).

No problems here. Works wonders for me when compo'd with proper skills and squadmates. Tempest with warp-ammo seems to be reliable in almost every situation I've come across with my sentinel.

The tempest SMG rips through shields effortlessly, paticularly up close. It's the ideal weapon for the range between mid and short. Assault rifles are more versatile, but smg's have their advantages.

I've taken down loads of enemies with the SMG, to the point where they go down before I even get to Charge them.

Especially when using Cryo or Incendiary ammo.
