Well personally I don't want any ME spin-off until after ME3's release, but I can't help but thinking how well the ME universe seems to lend itself to the genre. That, and I'm goddamn waxing nostalgic about the good ol' Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale games.
I don't think ME will nesseccarily make a decent traditional RTS, considering the universe is not exactly at war so there's very little reason for full-on modern warfare. But recent RTS with RPG elements would work fine. Think Dawn of War 2, but place more focus on characters and small-scale team-based action. Shepard could lead a squad of 6-8 members, and engage in missions with a variety of objectives, item/person extraction, capture the flag etc. And must use tactical mind and different powers of his team to get the job done.
Another option for the battle would be turn-based strategy, like Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. I guess if you grew up with old-school PC RPGs like me, then chances are you might hoped that battles in recent Bioware RPGs can be more tactical instead of action-oriented.
The overhead view, pause-and-give-orders, team recruitment and customization... All smell so distant now. *in Salarian voice* These days it's all about big choices and visceral combat...
