I don't know about you guys, but to me it seems a little strange that you can start a relationship with a crew member and they'll still call you by your last name. It also seems weird that soldiers that have a lower rank then Shepard still call him/her by his/her last name.

So, I think we should have names in ME3. Maybe they could program a series of preset names, and the voice actors could say them. This is just an idea, but I always felt weird being called "Shepard" instead of "Steven".

What do you guys think?

That would be good. But my Shep doesn't exactly have a common name.

Way too complex to pull off given the wide assortment of first names.

Personally, I would rather see that time and money spent doing any number of other things to improve the game. Those who pick non-standard first names miss out, and it would feel out of place with the way it was done in the other two games.

Lower ranking soldiers are supposed to call him/her "Commander Shepard."  You're not suggesting some Private calls him John?

But yeah, too many names floating around, too many lines to record and blend together smoothly.

I agree, not very feasible and not worth the effort to make it so. It doesn't bother me that the last name is always used - I just figure Shepherd is one of those people who just prefers to be called by his last name. You could role-play it if you wanted, and give your Shepherd a geeky first name like Poindexter or something. Then it would be clear why everyone just calls him Shepherd. :)

You expect VAs to record every single name in the world?

Most people won't like Shepard getting a fixed first name

Would be nice but obviously impossible to pull off.

Yeah, unless someone comes up with a way to synthesize natural sounding speech between now and the release of ME3, I think that the Last Name Basis is here to stay.

Would be nice but technology to pull that off without having it sound like a computer isn't out yet

Hell yes! As long as Lycidas is on the list of available names that is.

Having served some years in an army i became totally accustomed being called by my last name. Even friends in the unit either used nicknames/callsigns or last names to adress each other. Simply because everyone does adress you by your last name.

And no... i don't want to choose some names... my Shepard is military and i expect to be adressed as such.

Just start a new game and change his/her first name to Commander. There, problem solved.

If they didn't make the first name customizable then it would easily be doable.

I doubt "Cain Shepard" would show up on a list of names in game.

How are they going to pronounce Fdkfjdfsf Shepard?

As mentioned above, it is quite impossible to implement EVERY possible name. Though, if they implemented the same character data uploading data as they did in DA:O, they would have been able to determine the most common Shepard names and add those. That wouldn't help me in the slightest though, as my Shepards' names are quite uncommon.

My teacher in high school, everybody called by his last name. Seriously i don't even know his first name. Some people are just like that, its most common among soldiers and agents (in fiction at least).

This is why I'm interested in speech synthesis. You could enter your name and then tweak its pronunciation.

The only way to do this would be to replace all the characters and their VA's with AI's.

Would make the world more realistic though. Would also require a Quantum Computer to play, but....

IRL I've always been called by my last name since I was was a little kid. Up to the point that I no longer react when someone calls me by my first name. So naturally i don't see any problem with Commander Shepard being called by his last name :)

This holds true for me too. The only thing I could see an issue with is the LI, but for that one character, it's not really that noticable.

If the game could pronounce FoFo Edw77 Shepard that would be pretty cool. Because I can't
