From the point of view of the final battle allies (dwarves or golems), is it better to side with Branka or Caridin?

Are there any other serious consequences of that choice, other than the army that fights at the end?  I have Shale and want to do his personal quest, but the Wiki says I can get that quest regardless of who I choose - is that true?

To all of your questions:

[ I have Shale and want to do his personal quest, but the Wiki says I can get that quest regardless of who I choose - is that true?]

It is true, but PAY ATTENTION: if you take Shale with you when you go for Caridin (your last oportunity to change your group will be after talking to Branka for the first time, if I remember it well), and you side with Branka, Shale will turn against you and fight you as any enemy, which will not only make you lose an excellent companion as it will make the battle highly more difficult!

If you take Shale with you (and side with Caridrin), Caridrin will tell Shale about his past, unlocking immediatly the personal quest for Shale, which is finding if Caridrin said the truth.

If you don't take Shale, either you side with Branka or Caridrin, you will have to talk to Shale (you go and talk to "him") in the camp, after you get the dwarves aid - IF YOU HAVE GOOD RELATIONS with Shale (i don't remeber the exact number, I think it is enought to be WARM), he will ask you to help him uncover his past, unlocking a new area - an old thaig he remembers.

[Are there any other serious consequences of that choice, other than the army that fights at the end?]

There are. If you take Shale, and side with Caridrin, you will receive a major improval in your relations with Shale.

If you don't take him to the Anvil of the Void with you, you will lose points approval points with him (-10, I think) - either side you choose.

And, as I said, if you take him and side with Branka, he dies (you will have to kill him).

Apart from this, there are the morale consequenses: will you be able to live up to yourself knowing you are the responsible for the enslave of a thousand souls if you side with Branka? Or will you regret to the end of times not doing what was for the grater good and could have helped the dwarves if you side with Caridrin? - Even if it seems funny, that is the most important to me and I think it shold be your major consideration while making a choice.

Personally, I prefer the golems - they are fewer in number but far stronger per unit than the dwarves. Dwarves have high "resistance", making them usefull to distract the enemy and hold the line, especially if you have a mage, for example. Golems are stronger, but be carefull not to lose them - they are few.

In my opinion, the final battle should be your least consideration when choosing whom to side with - think by yourself, with tought and emotion, not like a machine considering the chances od suscess.

***Players who have already played throught Shale's quest will notice I commited some "intentional mistakes" in order not to post spoilers, but these are minor and have no influence in the story.***

That's all. Good luck with your game!

Good post RBM. I THINK but am not sure that you get the dwarven army regardless of who you side with (Caridin or Branka) since the dwarves ae the ones you are treatifying with in Orzammar in the first place. Just if you side with Branka you get a golem army too to summon in the final fight. And you can only summon ONE army at a time, you can't have dwarves, elves, mages etc all at once. So weigh that in your consideration too, you won't get MORE numbers just another group you can summon.

If you side with Branka you can have dwarves + golems at the final battle. With Caridin you get the dwarves. If Shale is present then Shale will side with Caridin. If Shale is not present and you side with Branka you will take an approval hit with Shale. With Oghren (who must be present) you take a -10 point hit if you back Caridin, but he fights on your side. You can get 7 points of it back if you ask him what he wants afterwards in a dialogue with Caridin.

The final battle really isn't terribly hard. I generally side with Caridin (Oghren gets over Branka easily enough) and work on my coercion so I can recruit the Legion of the Dead. I enjoy Shale too much and the golems do not really add anything once you have recruited them once.

Yea, I'd focus on getting Legion of the Dead over the Golems imo.  I never saw any real benefit from them.  I think you only get 4 anyways.

You do get the Dwarves no matter what.  My last game I used the Legion of the Dead and they destroyed everything wit ease.  I had to wait for enemies to spwan they were killing so fast.  :)

oh man the Legion owns in that fight.  *I always use the dwarves in the last battle* and those little guys are like mini Sherman tanks just wailing on anything in sight.  I loved em!

I've not run into Shale - who and where is he?

Is there an easy way of getting past the ghostly dwarves and spirit anvils

She, not he.

She is a golem encountered in the village of Honnleath - Stone Prisoner DLC required.

Park you team near the door you enter from, send one party member (preferably someone who can take damage) to hit the anvil and deal with the dwarves one at a time.

When you destroy an anvil it sends a bolt of energy into the face looking at the anvil. This damages the face (make the eyes bleed or stop bleeding, can't remember). When you zap all 4 faces you pass the test. If you're destroying more than 4 anvils you're wasting your time.

^Wasn't it something like zapping each face 3 times, meaning a total of 12 destroyed anvils?

You zap them all twice and they rotate every time you zap one. When you zap them once they start bleeding from their eyes and keep damaging your party until you zap them again. And then when you zap them again they stop bleeding and die. :D

When you persuade the legion of the dead to join the fight in the surface, doesnt the dialogue option say something like: "Show the world your might."?

It does sound appropriate. They are a great fighting force:D.

You get better endings if you side with Caradin. The worst possible ending is Harrowmont + Branka.
