Saying we're gonna 'spill some drinks' has nothing to do with being black. :P  Yea, Jacob is black, but I don't see any african-american connotation with it...

Talk to a native of Africa or maybe a black in Europe

I'm sure you'll see they don't speak that way.

What I mean is, it's not a black thing to say, it's an american thing to say. I think you guys are seriously exaggerating his speech, just like the OP did in the title. It was slang. That's it.

I really don't think I would see a lot of non-black Americans using that phrase... and if I did I doubt many of them would refuse to acknowledge that the phrase is typically associated/originated from american blacks.

It's like denying that the phrase 'dat ho' is of american black origin.

I never noticed anything wrong with his dialogue before they started saying stuff...

And that's because you're comfortable with "If he looks black he should speak like this and not like that". In 2185 it's quite odd and jarring to see Jacob go from a casual cool guy to ebonic.

I don't think he should speak in ANY specific way, and I don't look at him and expect a certain way of talking, either.
I just don't freak out or find fault when he chooses to say something that sounds black. I accept it, just like I'd accept it if he chose not to sound black.

Alright, well I suppose we just see things differently. :P

On a side note, I did just see this, and will never look/listen to that scene the same way. XD

So what's your point?

Are you offended that Jacob is black? Or offended that he's American?

This thread is plain and utter stupidity, there are plenty of other folks (Asian, White, Mexican, ETC) that talk like that. It's not a cultural thing, it's a "trendy" thing.

"Dat ho" is blatantly american black.

"Spill some drinks" is something all my white AND black friends might say.

I thought it was good to have someone caring about "spilling some drinks" after having sunk a Collector ship.

I and several non-black friends definitely use the phrase and I'm American.

Imagine if he had a southern cowboy accent and said the same thing. It still works and is not "ebonics". Spill drinks is something I have never heard anyone,  black or otherwise, say ever, as a reference to going out. Sorry are Black people not allowed to use metaphors or analogies or does that just make it sound like they are rapping to you? It is not racist at all. Maybe a little gay with how Shepard is sitting with a follow up hug, but only a little.
Also as to it being African-American anything, I will point out Bioware is a Canadian company.
[takes note of all racists]

Can anyone explain to me, about this drink spilling thing.

Im not american, so I dont understand the american-african connotation???

... There isn't one.

There is

Jacob's mannerism and speech was definitely that of an american black.

Well if I had to make a conjecture, I would have to say that it would probably be because he is an American Black.

Imagine if he had a southern cowboy accent and said the same thing.

People would complain a LOT more if he had another accent. A lot more people would have noticed the issue and complaints would have been much louder. I think they gave him the most fitting accent, and that's it. He doesn't speak like a pimp not seems vulgar to me, even those few slang phrases don't ring the Bronx bell in my head. It's just that people like to argue.

I'm pretty sure it's not an actual expression. As in, whomever at BioWare was responsible for Jacob's dialogue coined the phrase.

I meant if he was white and had a cowboy accent.

Jacob: Damn it, Commander, this is why I left the Alliance and joined Cerberus, so everyone would stop god damn nitpicking over every little thing I say. At Cerberus, when I say let's go spill some drinks on the Citadel, we don't hold a meeting to requisition a team to find out whether it's stereotyping my character or not, WE GO SPILL SOME FRICKING DRINKS ON THE CITADEL.

I lol'd.

This stuff is so silly. It's a stereotype because they hear it and then immediately attribute it to be being black. Doesn't that make them the racist?

Here's a hint. Listen to him talk. Interract with him. Now, close your eyes. No more black skin is there?

Keep listenin' and interracting. Now, ask yourself who you hear talking; a black guy, or just a guy.

Here's a hint; if you still think it's a black guy, you're probably semi-racist.

I agree.

Oversensitivity to possible stereotyping can be just as annoying as stereotyping itself.

This thread...is insanity incarnate.

They are mad because it's stereotyping...but they are stereotyping by identifying it as something only a black person would say. The only argument in this thread is "Jacob isn't that black, he wouldn't say something like that." and to that I want to share a giant F-U with those people who believe that.

I hated the line too..

Its one of the main things that annoys me about Jacob, he's a great character and a positive black one as well... then suddenly that one line tarnished him.

It's not the mid-90s in America anymore.

Well it works if you are paragon in your approach to him and keep things casual and become bros with him.  Then it doesn't feel so wierd.  Granted, it still felt a bit wierd because he never really spoke like that before that point.

If anything, I wish this could've happend.  I'd have brought Garrus and Grutn  along as well and we'd all be reminiscing about the crazy crap that happened and what we did in the past and probably get so drunk that Garrus would end up married to some Asari prostitute, Jacob would be in jail, Shepard would wake up naked in the counil's chambers with it wrecked beyond belief, and Grunt would find out that he was doing a good imitation of Legion and now is on the Citadel's most wanted list of criminals because everyone thinks he is a Geth.

LOLLLLLL!!!!!! OP your thread title is fantastic!!!

and yes, it was annoying as hell. jacob's character was just all sorts of wonky. the forced Femshep flirting, the in and out of "stereotypical black guy" mode. it was all a little unsettling and mostly irritating.
