So I've gone through ME2 four times already, but each time I've played it exactly the same. I import the same level 60 male paragon, and make all the same major decisions each time. I always blow up the Collector base. I always romance Tali, I always save everyone. So far the only thing I've done differently each time is pick a different class. I've tried on a couple occasions to try playing a female or renegade character, but I always quickly lose interest and start playing as Sean Shepard again. Does anyone else have this problem, or am I just weird?

I actually cannot play as the same character repeatedly. I like importing my other character(s)* and playing as them. I do things differently on each, except for one thing which is romance Miranda each time.

I did that a lot with the likes of the Baldurs Gate games and Fallout 1 and 2.

Nowadays I just play through the game once, then shelve it until the next one comes out when I'll replay it to refresh my memory!

I'm right there with you. :P I feel really attached I guess to my 'main' character, and it's hard for me to deviate from him because I don't feel that same attachment.

I played through Mass Effect 1 three times. First time Paragon, second time Renegade, third time what I would do if I faced these situations. I planned to do the same for Mass Effect 2. However, I just couldn't bring myself to do anything differently. There is too much to this game to have to appreciate on every single level, so I just ended up sticking with playing it the way I would do things in a real situation. I know I am missing out on a bunch of alternate content, but my way was the only way I wanted to play Mass Effect 2 (loyal to Ashley, blow up the base, destroy the heretics etc). I guess we are both weird :P

My main choices usually end up being the same, but I do consciously make myself do some things differently just to see what it's like, and so I won't have to wonder what it'll affect when the finale is released... but yes, mosly my characters are similar as well...

Humans are creatures of habit. You're not weird.

I encourage you, however, to play a little bit differently. There are so many interesting dialogue options, for instance, that I would've never explored on the first time around, and would still be undiscovered had I kept everything the way it was.

I have the same "problem" so far as you, OP. Male paragon soldier, Tali romance. Keen on getting everyone out alive.

Yeah, I'm pretty much the same. I've played through three times and my character is always pretty much the same.

Yup. Sometimes I'll save before certain choices and try them out to see what happens, but generally I play the same way.

Well I don't do everything exactly the same. I do try to mix up the dialogue up a bit and do or don't do different interrupts. Its mostly where the big decisions like the collector base, the genophage cure, and the Heretics, that I find my self going back into the old routine.

I guess its mostly how I perceive Shepard. I've never had this problem with other RPGs were you can radically play the character differently. But with ME, I'm not playing some blank slate, I'm playing as Shepard. Shepard is his own character, one that you can shape in your own way, but is still someone with defined character. Any major shifts in that character such as gender or morality is simply off putting to me.

I'm sure I'll get around to doing at least one female or renegade character before ME3 comes, but it will definitely take time. Hell, I had this same problem with ME1, and I only got around to doing female/renegade character about a month before ME2 came out.

Same here, I've played through the game 4 times with the same ME1 import. I would have liked to use my other ME1 character but apparently it wasn't up to spec in order to import it (I don't remember if I ever finished ME1 with the other character I backed up).

Im pretty much the same, and i also do things what i think are right. However, in ME1 i discovered a problem that is present in ME2 aswell, the fact that what Shep says is often different of what you choose or think his going to say.

So i also advise you to try out the different dialogue choice and see whats behind them, i usually tend to stick to the ren/paragon dialogue options when they are presented, thinking that they are the best way to go, but i've found that sometimes choosing someting else in a given situation where the red and blue dialogue is available is much more closer to something i would say.

So definetly check those out, so in your final playthrough you know whats behind each door, and can truly play as yourself or as close to your self as possible.

I'm actually the same as you in that my moral leanings don't change from playthrough to playthrough. I'm pretty consistently paragon.

I was meaning more like... well, how about romances? You sound like you always romance Tali. So try something different, romance Jack or Miranda. Jack's romance scene is really emotionally impacting and Miranda has a kiss scene in her quarters before you even get to the romance scene that's pretty fun and interesting.

I've been considering going with Jack for a while as I think she's a great character, but my  inner Tali fanboy always draws back in. Miranda? No thanks, as she is only squad mate that I actually dislike. You know what scratch what I said about never letting anyone die. I did reload a save, and brought an unloyal Miranda with me to the final battle just to see what would happen. Crushed by debris, which actually doesn't make much sense when you think about it.

Sorry to hear you don't like Miranda. Image IPB

Go with Jack then. That was a really interesting romance. Jack pushes you away emotionally and it makes the romance scene (if you go paragon) really good.

Also, do you do other things differently, as well? Mix up the order in which you recruit people, for instance, try different scenarios? I do this and I find a lot of cool stuff I didn't before.

Ditto, except Tali is the lucky girl.

But... Miranda got to snag one of my Shepards. She has a keeper too. He is probably the most badasses of my Shepards. (I swear if Shepard has the option of taking over the Galaxy at the end of ME3.. this one is the one that will do it.)

I had a character for each class that I had imported from ME1. So there was plenty of variety. Still by my fifth and sixth playthrough, I was kinda forcing myself. It got real boring even with all the variety. <<

I like doing different things. I have four playthroughs, two paragons and two renegades for both genders. But I like renegade best. :)

I have the exact same problem, I actually started a new game just so I could have a save with alot of casualties for a bit of variety in ME3. I find myself incapable of doing it though, I've done Miranda and Garrus's loyalty quests tonight and am planning on doing the rest later. Im gonna end up with everyone alive again.

I play the exact same way. Always same character, always same major decisions, etc. The only thing I change is my class. I can't bring myself to play another character since I feel disconnected from the game when I try. All I keep thinking is "this isn't my real Shepard, this isn't how my Shepard looks, this isn't how my Shepard acts". So I quickly lose interest and delete the new character.

so far both my games have been imports, one was a liara romance, and this one is an ash romance. in me1 i usually kept the renegade choices, because the paragon options (like saving the council) bugged me to no end. this game however i like both options. first run was a full renegade, Shep was basically a sith by the time i finished the game. this run im trying to play a paragon, with a some of the interruptions for the renegade side because they are so insanely fun.

if i play again i will be a renegade again, but its definitely fun trying something new.

I've always played with the same character, same look, most of the same choices.

I just tweak things here and there to try and create my definitive Shepard that will go on into ME 3.
