Return to Ostagar.

Since this thread got necromanced anyway, I might as well throw in my two cents. Zevran disapproves of building the pyre for Cailan because a) he's Antivan, and Antivans don't necessarily burn their dead like Fereldans do, B) Cailan was a total stranger and c) he doesn't see much point in going to that much work.

Leaving Cailan nailed to the pillar is about as much effort as he's willing to expend. Anything more is foolish sentimentality.

Hm, this was curious to me too- kept replaying the options and couldn't choose anything that pleased Wynne, Alistair, and Zevran at the same time.

I took the approval hit from Zev explaining it as his revulsion to seeing authority lauded so gratuitously. He is a professional criminal after all. He didn't have to hate Cailan or the fact that Cailan was the king of Ferelden rather than of Antiva- just hate the impulse to go out of one's way to perform special death rituals for monarchs at all. And no special ritual for the countless soldiers? In Antiva the frequency of assassinating rulers makes fealty to any one seem absurd, and Zev was personally involved in the assassination of a prince.

That said, he really doesn't indicate anything throughout the game that would make that a definitive reason for his strong nose-thumbing of the idea of cremating Cailan. It's just the impression I got that made it seem less incongruous to the Zevran Experience. He's irreverent at the Urn of Sacred Ashes moment as well, and even the end party at Landsmeet he hopes will be disrupted by a Crow assassination attempt. So it could also just be his usual repugnance to taking ritual and position so seriously. Dunno. But -5 for it?

Another thought I had was that Zev was jealous of such special attention to some unknown guy, but it's likely the same reaction regardless of Zev's romantic involvement or prospects.

I think it's just that for all any of you know, the darkspawn could send grunts to retake the place at any moment, possibly coupled with Zevran not believing that Cailan is still able to be harmed by anything the spawn do or the heroes neglect to do.

Actually, what is most likely is that it was "b team" writing and having the "bad" characters disapprove of the "good" choice. Morrigan also hates it.

I don't take the DLC that seriously because much of it lacks the nuance of the main game.

And yet, Zevran already shows himself to be only loosely religious in the main game's banter with Alistair and Wynne (he's even less so than Alistair, I mean) and when it comes right down to it religious reasons are the only reasons to care about Cailan's corpse. So while it's not impossible for him to care about proper burial of the dead, it's also not strictly required.

Zevran claims to be quite religious, in in his own way, and says he asks for forgiveness every chance he gets, which confuses Alistair. Alistair claims to be not very religious in that same banter.

In truth, I don't see approval or disapproval there for the character -- and certainly not as much disapproval has he gives. Whoever wrote it disagrees. It's strange and jarring, but ultimately, NBD.

Yea, it wasn't like it was that hard to get approval back up. Zev's my Warden's bestest buddy (right after Alistair). Was just strange to me to lose that much over some simple act of kindness/respect, when he's usually a lot more easy going, saving his disapproval for things he has a lot more passion about (like the treatment of the 'underdogs' in the game).

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing when I brought Zev to Ostagar. He may not gain approval for such an act, but I wouldn't have expected him (a pretty neutral-standing companion as it is) to be offended by honoring the dead even if he didn't care one way or the other about Cailan.
