They did it so people wouldn't have to start the game over just to play the DLC. For that purpose, it's not a stupid idea. No one is forcing you to continue after you beat the game.
Playing after the suicide mission....stupid idea.

I got some material for my videos after the game had ended (e.g. romance progress seems rapidly sped up, Cain heavy weapon available, with ammo), so I won't complain too much.
But yes, it would have been nice if at least Anderson had some new dialogue. As suggested, though, it is likely saved for ME3.
