IMO, the Samara/Morinth choice and everything that follows it is kind of dumb and illogical unless you play a full or partial Renegade who saves Samara.

It doesn't really work for Paragons, because it amounts to an extrajudicial execution - exactly the sort that Paragon Shepard can stop with a dialogue choice or an interrupt on multiple other loyalty missions. You can stop Miranda from killing Niket, Garrus from killing Sidonis, Jack from killing Aresh, and Mordin from killing Maelon, but you can't just have Samara trap Morinth with a stasis field and hand her over to asari authorities? OTOH, for a Paragon to spare Morinth at the cost of Samara's life doesn't make sense either.

If you're a Renegade, maybe you'd be worried that Samara will turn against you when the mission is over, but "Morinth will be more useful to me" is a completely ridiculous line. We're talking about a serial murderer who's presented as literally addicted to killing innocent people. This is not somebody you can trust on a suicide mission. And her Samara-imitation doesn't extend to combat, when she openly yells about "the power of the Ardat-Yakshi" when attacking enemies and none of the other squadmates seem to notice anything.

The last time through with my canon Paragon Shepard, I deliberately failed the mission by picking enough "wrong" choices in the conversation with Morinth that she got up and left. I'd rather have Shepard simply make a mistake than go quite so far out of character.
