Tali could quite possibly be the worst squadmate in the game. Her weapon loadout sucks and her only useful power is the drone. Legion is better than her in every way. Jacob has his uses early on for pull and squad inc ammo and Jack has some limited form of CC at least.
Everyone else has some uses, Miranda is probably the best overall though.
Useless Squadmates?

The only one I never really found a use for was Jacob. But that's kinda a matter of flavour. I used Tali for much of the game (where I could, seeing how she comes into play so very late due to some, in my opinion, crappy design decisions) and found her excellent.

I think it's cute how Tali names her combat drone.

I didn't find nearly enough synthetic enemies in the game to really justify bringing along tali or legion on more than their loyalty missions. With legion you get him so late it doesn't really matter much.

Funny. I thought Thane was really useful. When I gave him the Viper, plus the 50% sniper damage boost, he basically owned the battlefield.
I'd actually state that BioWare did a very good job in making all the squad members useful. I was a Vanguard, so I usually had Tali and Thane/Miranda/Mordin behind my back to compensate for my lack of tech skills, and Tali's combat drone was immensely useful to me as a Vanguard what with it keeping enemies off my back as I Charged in. I mixed in Garrus sometimes if I knew I'd be up against solely synthetic targets, mostly because of Overload. I never bothered with AI Hacking a lot, though. It was very situational and it was simpler to just put those squad points into something more useful.

Most useful are definetly Garrus, (Good long and mid range, versatile and useful on any difficultly) Legion (v. good ability selection and weapon versitailty) and Grunt (Huge health+fortification+claymore=unstoppable)
As for least useful...
Tali is on of my fav characters, but after you recruit Legion, due to his superior weapon choices and (imo) more useful and versatile 4th power, she is much less useful, though generally Legion is recruited later on then her, so she's still useful, especially when you need 2 technicians when fighting large amounts of mechs/geth.
I find Mordin's uses diminished on hardcore and insanity, but on casual-veteran, incinerate and cyro blast are very useful, especially when coupled with neural shockwave.
Jacob is nigh-useless, lets leave it at that. I guess his pull-shotgun combo will cut it on early missions, but not later on.
I actually think Jack is often more useful then Samara due to shockwave, despite most of the posts here.
Thane isn't that useful, but on higher difficulties warp is good. I also find Miranda isn't that useful until higher difficulties, where she really shines, due to overload AND warp.
But as PseudoEthnic said, besides Jacob your squad is very competant. It's all about getting the right mix at the right times.

After two playthrough on insanity i made my decision on this, squadmates are just "social furniture" for your ship, nothing more. A harsh opinion for sure and maybe i came to this because of the classes i ve played (infiltrator and soldier) still i can't help thinking after every combat, every mission, gosh this time again i just did all the work.
That being said there is still one or two situation where your teamates can come in handy. I appreciate tali's drones on the husks horde in the last mission and i admit that a few times i ve found myself too close of some sneaky enemy and was glad to have someone able to concussion/pull the threat away.
I'll will play the game again in a few month and try a bio/tech class to see how much i'll need to rely on my mates then.
On those 2 runs i ve always picked my favorites whenever they were available.,whatever the mission. Tali, Zaeed and Mordin. Could i ve taken joker on the field, i would ve hidden it behind cover the whole time joyfully.

I definitely agree as a party member, Legion overall blows Tali out of the water, with the better weapon selection and the fact they fill similar roles, though remember you get Legion very late game, so besides the suicide mission, there's not much utility that he sees for most of the game.darknoon5 wrote...
