Ok, first of all, YES I have used both of these, I overall prefered the Viper on my Soldier for an accurate rapid firing weapon since I chose the Revenant.
But now I have made an Infiltrator and love it. If find that headshots become more important and I have recently got the Viper.
However I immediately noticed how much weaker it was headshot wise. I can kill most enemies with 1-2 headshots with the Mantis and I rarely run out of ammo.
I'm leaning towards the Mantis at the moment but what do you guys think, (no one say the Widow because thats obvious :P)?

Mantis?
or
Viper?

I like the widow anti-material sniper. with all the upgrades, it's truly wicked.

Between those two, I'd use the viper, since it tends to get more killing done before running out of ammo, although I picked the widow which is what I always use.

get the widow when you discover the *SPOILER WARNING* collectors are actually protheans when you get the IFF. yu can pick the battle rifle, shotgun, or sniper. the sniper is the widow.

Between the two, Mantis, but seriously, the Widow just WRECKS everything. Cloak + time dilation + headshot = win. I wracked my brain trying to decide between assault rifle training or Widow on my first playthrough, and eventually I chose the Widow--best decision ever.

For a soldier I'd take the Viper it's actually more of a Battle Rifle than a Sniper rifle. So it fits a soldiers arsenal more than the mantis does.

What's the Incisor like anyone? I don't have that DLC.

My main problem with the Mantis is this: "Ok, I just killed 10 guys. Now I have to either stop being a sniper for a while or break cover and scrounge for thermal clips."

My main problem with the Viper is this: "Ok, I just shot that guy in the head twice. Why isn't he dead yet?"

In terms of the amount of damage you can deal before you run out of thermal clips, the Viper wins. It can do almost twice as much damage as the Mantis before you run out, but it lacks that One Shot, One Kill power that is central to sniping.

Depends on the foe.

I have found that the Mantis wins every time when facing foes that are unshielded. The Mantis will rip through Armour, Health, and Barriers in an instant. Against Shielded foes it always takes multiple shots to remove the Shield even with Disruptor Ammo equipped and scoring a head shot each time.

The Viper wins every time when facing Shielded foes. Getting three head shots off in two seconds with any ammo equipped leaves the enemy vulnerable to at least two more rapid fire shots that are bound to kill it.

I went with the Mantis for most situations and only picked up the Viper when I knew I would be facing shielded opponents. I'd pop the shields off with the Viper and have my squad finish off the unprotected sap while I moved onto the next enemy to pop.

@Jayce: The Incisor is a 3 burst Sniper Rifle. It is the Vindicator of the Snipers. Damage is decent with the player but largely inefficient. The Incisor is absolutely a beast in the hands of a squad member. They will usually get off the 3-burst shot with most bullets being a head shot. If you equip your squad with Incisors on Insanity the game will play for you by itself.

It would be good if it had more ammo as you tend to burn through it quite fast otherwise.

I skipped the Widow to keep SOME challenge to the game. The Mantis is plenty powerful enough, I was oneshotting collectors on Hardcore with it (haven't tried Infiltrator on Insanity yet.) The ammo limit is really the only balance there is to it.
