Well, no one has to die if you pick the oak, you can still get through the forest, you can still get the hermit's loot, and you don't have to pay bribes of werewolf pelts. IMO, the oak is definately the way to go.

They're both funny.

I'm not quite as homicidal as some other forums (although the werewolves might disagree) so I like to go for the trading solution. Talk to the Oak, enjoy your companions reactions, then talk to the Hermit, trade him for the acorn and the helmet, and then get the mage staff from the tree.

Or you can kill one or the other. Dog is one of the best companions and I reckon voluntarily chopping a tree down might upset him, so I don't do it (He doesn't actually ever get upset with you).

You don't have to kill either, but I like trading with the hermit, killing him, and returning later for the bonus xp.

Unless your PC has a phobia towards barked entities, or is a Lumberjack, I don't see the benefit of having to kill the thing.

I suppose it saves yourself a trip. If you help the tree, you have to walk back and forth. Just killing it guarantees a one-way trip if you're not out looking for Juggernaut pieces.

heh I traded. Is the book you get from him worth anything other than the codec update? I tried to give it as a gift to wynne but wasn't able to do so...

The book you get from Cammen in the Dalish Camp (by the storyteller) if you help him out with his relationship problem. The Juggernaut Armor is a Massive Armor set that you get in piece by piece for defeating the Revenants hidden in the Brecilian Forest, with the last piece being the reward for solving the elven water/prayer ritual thingie in the werewolf lair. It's very nice, Silverite, and looks like King Cailan's armor, except silver.

Assuming you're playing in the indicated area as we speak, you'll know what I'm talking about soon enough. I'll just say those tombstones you might have seen in the forest aren't there for decoration.

My PC is a "goodie two-shoes", so she would never kill a living being if there is another way, thus I prefer the Grand Oak's quest (due to the trading solution). However, in my first playthrough I didn't see the Oak at first, and went directly to the hermit... needless to say that I felt really guilty afterwards for killing the poor tree.
BTW, if you want, you can also steal the hermits belongins. If you prefer to do this, make sure to have Zevran in the party, as he will have an hilarious comment for that... However, you'll have to kill the hermit afterwards.

Well, as others mentioned, you can  do it legitimately without killing either.  The Hermit will gladly trade for the acorn, then you can simply   return it to the Oak  and be on your way.

If you WANT to do some killing, I'd recommend  siding with the Oak and killing the  Hermit.  The Oak gives you a fairly decent staff that you can use or sell.  The hermit gives you  some "disguises" that you can't sell (they stay in the plot section of your inventory)

How can you kill the Oak? That poet tree is awesome. Besides, stealing the acorn with Zevran in the party is much funnier.

My PCs are all practical, somewhat chaotic, but all are basically good. There will be no oak-killing here, ever.

The hermit? Perhaps. Some did, some didn't. All had their reasons. For trading the PC has the book (Cammen), the shawl (Denyla), and something else I don't remember atm.

I'd recommend trading for the helmet if you wish to assemble a certain armor. Unless you're on a pc, where the bottom part of the armor is in hiding, never to be found. Thank goodness for mods. Iirc, the helmet cannot be gotten by looting the tree-stump.

There's a mod for that which affects nothing else in the game. The armor is well worth getting in it's entirety for use before Diligence is available/usable.

Yeah, I just got it. It looks like a clean and small mod, so it's all good. I'm planning on sticking my rogue into medium armor for a change. I'm sick and tired of the light armor. I hope it works out.

As for the elder tree, because I never even considered killing it, I had no problem getting to the lair. How does the PC get there without the staff?

The hermit gives you a magic werewolf pelt (non-tradeable), iirc. That allows you to pass freely through the barrier.

A magic werewolf pelt? For some reason that made me laugh. Thanks Mousestalker.

I found the Oak to be the more sensible of the two. So generally I go and trade for his acorn, no one has to die :) (course, there was that one time when one of my characters rifled through the hermit's belongings and we had to kill him...whoops).

I always end up killing the hermit if I have Zev with me because his lines if you steal from him or loot his tree are just too funny. He only lives when I do the Dalish quest first.

Yup, I've done that, but didn't feel bad in the slightest having to put him down after he summoned his pet demons and other nasty surprises.

To complete the quest, all you need is the acorn. The other two items are optional. I believe you can continue trading with him as long as you don't attack or steal from him, but I'm not sure... since I usually do both =D

The book is just something to sell if I remember right. The helmet goes to the Ancient Elven Armor set.

I'm fond of the Grand Oak because the dwarves get the best rhyme when you identify yourself as such. "Ahhh, a child of the deeper stone. I should have heard it in thy tone. The woods have never been thy home, 'tis far beneath the earth you roam." It just tickles me to hear that each time.
