I was getting the "Error [36]" when trying to patch DAO on Win 7 Ultimate. The steps i followed to fix the problem are listed below -
1. Uninstalled DAO.
2. Looked for folders that might have been left behind in "C:\\Users\\[USERNAME]\\Documents\\BioWare" and the installed location. Delete / move to a different location, as per personal choice.
3. Ran CCleaner and removed all Registry references.
4. Manually searched in Regedit for any references to DAO under BioWare keys and deleted.
5. Re-installed DAO. (did not reboot, you can reboot if you feel like, looks like it made no difference)
6. Rebooted after re-install. (Did not start the game)
7. Applied update 1.02a immediately after restart. Did not start game yet.
8. Started the game and configured it. Then went into the game and got the DLC.
Game ran fine with above steps.
Other details -
1. Not running any antivirus.
2. Latest drivers for ATI and other components.
3. about 10GB free space on Windows Drive and the installed location of DAO.
4. Install location of DAO not in "Program Files" / Windows drive.
Hope it helps.

Thanks this solution worked for patch 1.03 using the Impulse installation on Windows 7 64bit.
I had one minor problem due to changing the game installation directory with the Dragon Age: Origins updater service which needed to be reinstalled. The solution to that problem is at http://forums.impuls...m/368287/page/4 in reply #96.

Looks like the patches are ment to be installed over a clean installation of DA:O. Uninstalling and reinstalling the DA:O seems to do the trick. Uninstalling the DA:O will also remove the toolset if installed.
