Actually, I don't feel the least bit guilty about my new romances, and I don't consider them cheating. There's nothing to justify, imo. If Liara had told me SOMETHING about how she felt concerning the romance, this might have been different.
But I can't pretend I didn't feel a little snubbed. I think the majority of gamers who turned from the old LIs felt hurt or cast out. You know? They felt like they were left with no other choices but these new LIs if they wanted love in their game at all, because their old LIs acted so distant.
Most of us were left standing there after our reunion with our LI like, "Uh... wtf?"
Intentional from Bioware, it has to be.
It will be interesting to see, how badly they miscalculated with these plot roles... If they return the ME1 LIs as squaddies, and sideline the ME2 characters, at least the early fan reaction will be something to see. Already the ME1 LIs are being called "selfish", "treacherous", "idiotic", "short sighted", "disloyal", and a plethora of other unflattering terms. Especially compared to Garrus and Tali. I can imagine the new kinds of outrage we'll see, if Kaidan/Ash/Liara smugly accuses Shepard of cheating on them in their first ME3 scene... And it would be completely justified outrage, at the sheer bad writing of it all (though most fans would just rail against the character)
Had they taken care to provide plausible reasons for them to stay on the sidelines, and not treat Shepard like dirt (and actually having the 2nd act of a 3 act romance be in the game), things might have worked out differently.
Of course, now that much of the fanbase has been alienated from the ME1 LIs, and no longer really cares all that much, the devs have a reason to not include them in major roles in ME3. It might be better to just cut the FUBAR character Liara out completely, at the very least. She comes off as deranged in ME2. Kaidan and Ash might prove to be salvageable yet, but it will require someone who is not Mac Walters writing them.
