A much better thing to so would be that the collectors takd Kaiden/Ash and then you rescue them on the collector station and then filled with graditude and love for you they join your squad for ME3!

I wish I had a picture of Joker's reaction face from the crew captured sequence, cause that would fit this moment perfectly.

You know, when I first read that ME2 would feature a whole new ship & crew, I was hoping that there would be a whole lot of rescuing going on. Seems like it would have been better than a campaign full of recruitment missions where people who don't know you from Adam are all about joining you for a suicide mission when the ones who've been with you through thick and thin can't be bothered (Tali & Garrus excepted).
At least they didn't kill my ME LI off (which I was really expecting after playing Dragon Age). Crazy that nobody ends up dead (unless you really want them to).

I did wonder why the hell this was never explained. They got the whole colony aside from the few people you found still in stasis but here come Ash/Kaiden around the corner of some random crate. "No worries I'm fine. Totaly under control nothin to see here."
I wish I had a picture of Joker's reaction face from the crew captured sequence, cause that would fit this moment perfectly.
Actually, they say 40% of the colony was taken.

But Kaiden/Ash were with the 40% that were taken.
Collector 1 "Do you think we should take the soilder who posess some threat first?"
Collector 2 "Yeah, I think he's Commader Seperds lover"
Collector 1 "I thinks he's the reason we came here"
Collector 2 "Well, assuming we dont have to leave in a hurry well take him last"
Collector 1 "Ok"

The way I think those seekers and the stasis fields work is as followed... the seekers carry small transmitters that they inject into a bodies bloodstream. Those transmitters are used to locate the body and giving information about the necessary size and proportions of the stasis field. Whatever creates the stasis field... I don't know, but I doubt it is the seekers.
Another hint that the seekers might work this way is their ability to block communications, most likely they can use those transmitters they carry for that reason too.
Now, for Ashley/Kaidan and their convenient appearance, obviously unharmed... who says they weren't about to be shipped into the Collector ship too ? Then you show up and WHAM... the Collectors make a run for it, leaving Ashley/Kaidan where they are. When the collectors are far away the signal upholding the stasis field breaks up, Stasis field gone.
Sure, one would argue that Ashley/Kaidan would have mentioned that somehow... but then again they seem to be too eager to let Shepard know they don't like Cerberus. <_<
