I was wondering does stuff like +5% spirt damage add into damage the mage does with staff attack? or does that only work with melee and range weapons?  And do posions work with mage attacks?

Yes elemental damage gear counts toward staff damage if it's an elemental staff, but poisons do not work.

Thread on reaching 70+ staff autofire damage. Vulnerability Hex, and Affliction Hex are important for high autofire elemental damage also, and having Shale in the group for another +10 spellpower(Stone Aura).
