Here's my idea. While I appreciate that art is entirely subjective and long terms fans aren't necessarily the direct target of marketing material, I think it is fair to say that many of us were completely baffled and indifferent to ME2's cover art for the simple reason that it lacked 'iconic'-status - it failed to encapsulate the 'essence' of the series as the cinematic trailer did or that covers for other series' like Halo 3, Gears 2 or GTA IV, etc did.
To me it was just so cheesy... like the worst bargin-bin b-shooter like design I could have imagined in a worst case scenario and how anyone could think it has even remote mainstream crossover-appeal is beyond me. IMO Mass Effect 2 has succeed on it's merits despite the bad generic looking cover-art. The placeholder design conveyed the overall theme of ME2/perilous terminus systems much better.
So why not next time given this could be Mass Effects final swan-song let the fans vote on the final short-list and at least take some constructive criticism and poll numbers under consideration.
If the fans then side with the art team then absolutely fantastic - they've done a terrific job and everyone should be happy with the end result.
However If a large geth-esque consensus builds on one design in particular that is not the shoe-in then I think this info would be more valuable than any focus group data.
