let the insults begin..
wah...wah....wah....If you don't want to hear it don't buy the game....Be a parent and police your children's game playing.....etc....
Why do publishers(or on another note, movies but I digress} feel the need to incorporate such a exorbinant amount of cursing into a game.
That said, I love this type of games(for the matter all types of games). I like to become part of the story, to feel like I make a difference in the story to some extent. And I do not mind the language in games for me, myself, or I.
I have children that like playing the same type of games I do, that like to watch while I play. My spouse does not like this type of language and while we can not police what they hear outside  of our house, we can try to regulate in our house.
I do play games with cursing in them but  have to play around my children's viewing. I know all the arguments...there are no bad words just bad meaning...etc. But tell that to my children or your children when they get suspended from school or whatever. Like it or not certain words hold certain status in our society. On Network TV and Radio they more or less hold to a certain standard, though that is changing every year. My point is can publishers put in filters to allow people to enjoy the game with out the cursing or what ever else? An appropiate Beep just like they do on TV or a fade to black for WHAT EVER ELSE.(see other threads for that can of worms) Something a person can set to change the game to allow their children or themselves play with out the cursing (OR WHATEVER ELSE). If a filter could be worked in more people could enjoy them. I honestly think there are a large amount of people that would buy certain games if this type of filter were installed. The Big M on a box does affect a publisher's profit margin .  I know there are hard core gamers that will disagree but I bet there are a lot that will agree with me.

The  field is now open and as I said let the insults begin.....

It's more natural. Compared to real life, the amount of cursing is downright saintly.

Don't make me laugh. No adult could ever write the incoherent garbage wall that is the original post.

Oh, yeah, a fade to black the instant Aria says f- until the -k, breaking her off mid-sentence and crushing her tone would be awesome. Honestly, what the hell, man? Do you live in South Park? "Horrific, deplorable violence is ok, as long as no one says any naughty words!"?

well i'm against censorship of any kind, myself.

i'm curious, do you ever wish you could buy DVDs that censored harsh language?

you mention exposing your children to the game (which is rated M, for mature content). don't you think that, given your willingness to do so, it would be an appropriate time to discuss with them the meaning and social stigma of such things?

That type of content filter is probably not a trivial thing to put in.

As you mentioned, it really comes down to the rating. It's an M rated game. It's not for kids. It's for adults. Adults tend to enjoy entertainment that is not filtered for the tastes and sensibilities of parents of 6 year olds. When some guy in the game just gets shot in the arm he shouldn't say "Fiddle sticks!" (unless he's the salarian doctor). He should say "^%$^&!!*#*#", as any other human being that did not grow up in the land of make believe would say.

It's just one of those sacrifices you have to make as a parent. Use a headset, or play when they are not around/asleep, or simply don't play M rated games. There are a ton of other sacrifices you have already made for them. This is just going to be another one. Hopefully when they grow up to be doctors and they have their own kids they'll understand and they'll buy you your won private island where you can retire and catch up on all your M rated gaming. :)

So how about you don't play around your children? Mass Effect 2 is rated M. They shouldn't be hearing/playing it anyways, not that it stops kids but still.

I live in New York so I'm soooo used to people just cursing even when it's not necessary...even Captain Bailey knows what's it like policing NY! =O

So you play a game for adults around children and you complain it's Bioware's fault?
Ok....
When will people realise that Video Games are not only for kids?

*facepalm*
The instant people started asking stupid questions/taking retarded actions/making idiotic statements. I.e. sometime around the beginning of civilization.

I dislike censorship, it's insulting to me as a person. If I buy a M-rated game, I expect the **** you willh hear and see daily. I don't need paradise and I am not saying mature games need sex or cursing, but if they try to mask it, I am just going to get my pitchfork.

- its not juvenile at all, it quickly sums up the feelings after rather silly questions

Its a M rated game. Im sorry you don't like cursing. Personally I dont swear as I just dont see the need but Im not going to stop someone else from doing it. If you don't want your kids to hear it either take the responsibility of not exposing them to something they shouldn't be seeing let alone hearing or simply wear headphones.

This problem comes down to you not taking responsibility, the box tells you what was going to be in the game you simply chose to ignore it and blame bioware afterwards.

To the OP; if you don't want your kids to hear the cussing, wear head phones?

Also, I'm curious; you have a problem your kids hearing cursewords, but you're fine with them hearing the desperate cries of agony your enemies sometimes make? That age rating is there for other reasons then language, there's also the whole shooting people thing.

It's quite funny how people complain about mature content in a mature rated game.

seriously, if you don't want your kids to hear it.... then don't play it when they're around OR make them leave the room.

Its not that big of a deal. Plus, in heated situations in real life..... like say iraq: Troops are getting shot at and what do you expect them to be saying, "oh gosh darn it jim"

I don't know why people do so much fuss about cursing or language filters this or is it just American culture. During localisation of ME1 polish publisher made Wrex saying f*ck every two words and no one ever thought about language filters due to one reason - game has M sign. It always amazes me that in anglosas culture (especially US) violance (you can throw a merc out of a window) is ok, unless you don't curse. Or show boobs.

I mean look at Witcher (polish game). I can't say they hold back much. :)

Swearing is a powerful tool in the english language and certainly has its place in a character heavy game like mass effect. However the less a person swears the more powerful the words become and the more emotional resonance they have. In my opinion there is too much senseless swearing on TV and video games the words are losing their impact and their whole point of existing.

as I understand generally most of the americans think that only kids play video games, I might be wrong but so ive HEARD, when I look in my ME2 box the 18 age restriction stamp shows really clearly, cursing in games, as little thing as it is, it gives more feeling in the game, for examble fallout, think how that game would feel without any cursing in it, cursing is like any other small details ingame, it gives that small amount of more feeling in the game, realistic or not, The profinaty filter wouldnt hurt if you could choose if it was on or not, Brutal Legend has it tho I dont use it I quess you could let kids play it really easilly by just turning off the gore and putting on the bleeps, the thing is: does the devs wanna put in extra work to make game more suitable for minors ?

The Witcher also had real consequences for your actions...
American priorities are messed up.
"Does the game have decapitations and people set on fire?
Yes.
Eh, they can take it, give it a 12+ rating.
Does it have cursing and/or nudity?
Yes.
CENSOR!CUT!BAN!"

i am 25 and i own a shotgun. when i shoot my shotgun i like to drink alcohol and curse excessively. shooting guns and profanity are best friends. that is my reasoning.

I think the cursing in this game was just right. It was realistically done and not cheezy. There in a suicide mission, it would be stupid if they didn't curse every once in a while. Now if you want to see exorbitant amount of cheezy swearing, then you can look up a game called Alone in the Dark. I can't believe I wasted $60 on that. Worst video game purchase ever.

A perfect moment to show how Raw Gears of War 2 actually is.

The cursing is what you could expect in a realistic situation like that depicted in the game.
