You can make a game that doesn't have any cursing, and it could be very realistic. Or, you can have bleeped cursing.
The OP is right that it is better to avoid cursing since all family members may walk by while he is playing.
There should be a bleep option, just like there's a "no blood" option in video games.

OP is an idiot. If he has issues with bad language in games then he should
not buy those. It is clearly stated on the game box that it contains
"bad" language (although I fail to see how language can be "bad"). I
dare say that swearing is a part of any language and just because you
are offended by certain combinations of syllables it will not go away. And censorship is NOT a solution.
Dear OP, buy a pair of ****ing headphones and turn off the subtitles. Your
fragile children's minds will remain unspoiled (at least until they get
into contact with... well anyone) and you will have a better,
undisturbed experience. But don't try to force those ridiculous bleeps into games meant for adults.

Some authors use cursing as an addition to the characters. This is the bad way, I always felt like avoiding it.
On the other hand, when a character's personality suggest he/she is the cursing type, it's good. So as long as it fits the character, it's completely normal.
And it's not a child game anyway. Spot the M letter on the box. That's your clue.

Pardon me while I fetch my soapbox. Kay still reading? Good.
First off, the ESRB rated the game mature, intended for audiences 18 and over. Did you bother reading that part of the box? If so did you pause and think "Hmm maybe this isn't something I shouldn't expose my kids to."
I don't know the answer to that, frankly I don't care either as you're here whinning about elements contained in it.
Secondly, games are an entertainment platform largely intended for adults. Key word there, adult. Adult, meaning a grown person, not children. They have enough crap on the Wii and other systems intended solely for them.
I have a right to enjoy a product intended for adults without some conservative censorship **** screaming over the use of words and elements contained in the product. Elements I might add that are found in everyday life.
Not only that, your logic is so flawed I cannot even begin to comprehend the sheer amount of FAIL it took to reach your faulty statement.
Mass effect goes beyond simple words though, so lets examine how much fail you really are made of, shall we?
You exposed your children to violence. Examples off the top of my head! Let me see, Shepard shoving a merc out of a window to his death, punching a turian, head butting a krogan, potentially punching a female reporter, beating up a suspect in interrogation. That is in addition to him killing countless mercs, collectors and whatever else.
Sex: Miranda, Jack, Tali, Kelly. (And the female romance options)
Booze:Several places. Afterlife, Darkstar, sharing a drink with the doctor.
Smoking:Seems like every merc, vendor and TIM all chain smoke.
Drugs:Samara Loyalty.
Swearing: Everywhere... This one amuses me.
Then have the gall to storm in here and demand an option to -censor- what is supposed to be a game intended for adults or to make a substandard product in a pathetic attempt to please everyone, rather than make a VERY high quality product intended for a certain demographic.
You sir, fail.
You want to remove the 'life' from real life. Art mirrors life, which mass effect and its universe -is- art.
News flash, people swear, fight drink, do drugs, smoke and screw in real life. The fact those elements are present adds a much needed bit of reality missing from the previous game. It feels dirty, dark and downright desperate at times. That's how it should be.
Thane said it best. The Universe is a dark place.
If only there was some way you could've known about all these bad things ahead of time! That the game wasn't intended for minors.... OH WAIT... The ESRB rating! What a concept! You claim the big M keeps people from buying games.
Let me see, two million sold in the first week. Again, your logic fails.
Source: http://terminalgamer...-2-is-huge-hit/
You choose to buy it, you chose to play it, you exposed them to it by playing it around them and -not- using the family settings built into the 360 to keep them from playing(assumption on my part. Disregard if they didn't play it themselves.) You couldn't be bothered to ask for some kid free time to enjoy ME2, instead you played it around them then got it into your brain you had the right to complain about what it has.
No one held a gun to your head and forced you to buy it or play it around the mewling brats. You did it of your own free will. Hypocrite.
In closing. Quit being a hypocritical douchebag. Accept responsibility for exposing your kids to it and stop crying over entertainment NOT intended for them. Do your damned job as a parent instead of expecting the world to do it for you.
-Zen
PS:Leave my entertainment the hell alone. I enjoy it just the way it is. If I wanted hello kitty island adventure I'd buy it.

Everyone curses, for time to time. It's a normal way to express anger, fear, hate. You just need to know when not to. Whether there is cursing in games or not does not teach kids when not to curse. Parents do that.

That would apply if it was a game for children. In a game that is not supposed to be played or even seen by non-adults that´s bullsh!t.

If you are a parent who owns the game, then play the game where your young ones are not around, do you have sex in front of your kids? no, then apply that rule to Mass Effect 2.

Hey, greg, I take it you haven't seen Reservoir Dogs? THAT has a lot of cursing. Throwing "f**k" a few times in a game doesn't qualify as "a lot of cursing".
I know this will sound real bad, but i find Tarantino insulting to my intelligence. i don't judge people who like it though. (So I haven't seen it, no.)
But I know swearing well. I am hungarian. Our cursing has been known to bring down walls.

Just as soon as they take out planet scanning, give Jacob a personality, and change the appearance of the final boss.
Until then, every game is going to have something that annoys. You can either overlook something that annoys you, or you can't, and the game isn't for you. Either way, get over it.

Swearing [is] realistic and swearing fitted Jack [very] well. I swear the people who complain about [there being] too much swearing, too much sex, too much violence in this game and in [other] video games need to get out of thier houses and see the world.
You know there is such a thing as too much sex or too much violence and yes - even too much swearing.
1.) Gratuitous sex. Sex for the sake of sex. When I feel like I am watching some soft core, thats to much. However, when sex is needed to show a relationship, forward the plot, or what have you, that is not gratuitous sex, and unless once again, if you feel like they intended for you to grab some vasoline during the scene, that is not to much sex. This does not apply to any video game I've ever played however. IMO, sex in ME I and ME II were tasteful.
2.) Gratuitous violence. IMO, there is no such thing as gratuitous violence in a video game. Generally, people like us play games about war torn worlds. Without alot of violence, without it being in the seams of the game world, it is just not authentic. There is however, such a thing as to much blood or gore, however, I havn't played a game with to much. Fallout 3 with that one ability that made a headshot blow off every appendage of your enemies body (each finger and toe, hands, arms, legs, d!cks, and heads) was a little rediculous. But it wasn't a kid game, and it was just intended to be extremely stylized like that Ninja Assassin movie (which had awesome fightscenes, though they were so bloody to the point that you were sitting there thinking 'wtf1?'). Also, I am assuming you don't play rape games in my assertions... if you do you need to go hang yourself - I will provide the rope and the stool.
3.) Gratuitous swearing. There was a movie my brother told me about that was something like 'Jay and Silent Bob'... it opened with a little kid sitting in front of a store singing 'f*ck f*ck f*ck mother f*ck mother f*ck mother f*ck f*ck f*ck mother f*ck mother f*ck mother f*ck f*ck f*ck'. That is to much, it is pointless, it is stupid, and while it doesn't offend me, I find it absolutely retarded. I've never seen anything like this in a video game, however I have seen tacky amounts of swearing where it doesnt fit and bad words are just used as shock value. Mass Effect however, seems to me to have tasteful swearing (in regards to its application).
Its funny that the people who love hearing the 'f-bomb' get off when they see someone's head chopped off, and are unable to hook a significant other to have a deep relationship with on an emotional and physical level are just as thin skinned about these issues as those who are pro-censorship who want the national government to raise their kids for them.

EDIT: I will not quote and thus advertise your rambling. The OP is right in saying that there is a lot of cursing in the game.
A) lolololol, no offence to the recipient but this had me in stitches
Try Fallout 3 & Max Payne 2, now there is a lot of swearing, particularly the quasi secret holding sell with the two Italian mobsters in a holding cell in Max Payne 2 (which does get a bit silly and wanton), and that kid in Fallout 3 screaming "shoot 'em in the f*cking anteners!!!" (direct quote I can spell antenae).
ME2 was pretty shy, (ok not compared to ME1) but by 18/M games standards definitely

Hey mate, I wonder if you've seen any of the Kevin Smith films, they always tend to have a major ott (both Jay and Silent Bob aka Kevin Smith appear in most of them) that scene is from (2001) Jay and Silent Bob Strike back and its very much in context, I recommend watching it and seeing how the irony unfolds cos while ham fisted it really rings true to this topic. Have a look at this and then tell me kids learn to swear from video games:
