Adding swearing was just another step in turning a sci-fi game with class and integrity into a vulgar, brash Gears of War clone.

Dear OP,
If you took as much time to explain to your children how to use language properly as you spent writing that post, you wouldn't have any issue with this. Teach your children to respect the language, and to speak respectfully to authority figures. That's where the problem occurs. Seeing bad language in a game is not what causes children to swear in school. Lacking respect for their teachers and principals and parents is what causes children to swear in school. I love my mother dearly, and I still don't swear in her house or in her presence to this day, and I'm well over the age where I can safely swear at authority figures because I respect her far too much, and I value her good opinion of me. My brother's children have the same level of respect for their parents and their grandmother. And yes, my brother's children play games like Mass Effect in front of their parents and yet still know better than to repeat that kind of language at home. We have always played games or watched movies with bad language and/or violence, and yet none of us have become serial killers or been thrown out of school (although I did get in trouble once for suggesting the principal had a lot in common with the National Socialist Party, which was a) true and B) politically motivated rather than disrespectful). I respectfully submit that anyone who thinks there is too much cursing in a videogame has never read and understood Shakespeare.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Also, as many people have already pointed out, this is a mature (15 in UK) game

I've always been cursing ever since I was seven or something, thanks dad. But cursing in videogames depends on the game itself, a game like Fallout 3, cursing seems very natural considering the circumstances. While cursing in a game like Mass Effect 1 or 2, it would seem out of place if you simply had a normal conversation with cursing.

Ugh,why can't I blow people up, gun them down, crush their bodies with my mind powers and disintegrate them without my wholesome gaming experience being sullied by offensive words. I don't want that kind of obscenity in my games!

[/sarcasm]

God I love this country.

Swearing is one of the natural progressions of society. Authority (read: Adults) resists change in society. Children are taught from the earliest stages in life to fit in, be normal, don't rock the boat. The status quo is always more comfortable than the unknown. As children age, they eventually buy in to the status quo, stop questioning authority, conform, and become good little citizens. But peculiar idiosyncrasies of youth always seem to make a dent in the next adult generation. That's why "When I was a kid..." is a story told by every generation.
Terms that fall under the umbrella of profanity change from generation to generation. Just as "b*tch", "chr*st", "pr*ck", "b*stard", etc. were all profanities in my youth and would cause Ivory Soap to be jammed into my mouth, words like "f*ck", "c*nt", "sh*t", etc. could very well be included in tomorrow's 6:00 newscast.
In the end, I would say it's a struggle between those who resist change and those who allow change. God bless the f*cking children.

So how about you don't play around your children? Mass Effect 2 is rated M. They shouldn't be hearing/playing it anyways, not that it stops kids but still.

I live in New York so I'm soooo used to people just cursing even when it's not necessary...even Captain Bailey knows what's it like policing NY! =O

Exactly. Sorry OP, but the game has the M label. I don't disagree with the addition of censory as an option, but in theory young children should not be even watching these types of games. It definitely didn't stop me when I was younger - I remember playing Perfect Dark and Conker's Bad Fur Day on the N64 back when I was like 8 years old. If you want to play games in front of your kids without cursing, just get E rated games and the like.

Having cursing in the game to make it more realistic sounds like a pretty weak excuse to me. To me, it shows a bit of a lack of creativity. Take the TV show Firefly(best thing since sliced bread). It's set in the same general time frame and they made up a whole new set of curse words that showed how language evolves over time. Are people really still going to be dropping f-bombs in 500 years? Come on, now. Show a little creativity. In point of fact, it actually makes the game less realistic. Because it's like putting a bunch of people from our time into the future and putting them on a ship and having them save the universe. Cursing with contemporary language actually detracts from the futuristic theme. I play a game and I want to be immersed in the universe it creates, I don't want a rough conglomeration of then and now. I want it to take me away from the world, not remind me of it, that's why people play games.

I just realized, you're a stupid necro.

I HATE NECRO's

wow so much flaming... seriously i dont think its such a bad thing to have censorship, dont get me wrong i understand what you folks are saying it is rated M and when you buy DVDs they dont come censored and the OP should not be playing M games around his kids the same way you dont watch 18+ movies around kids. that said it would not be too much of a feat to add a censor tab to games. I for one am not bothered by it and if you they can swear in 18+ movies they can swear in games. as i always say sometimes there is no better work than F**K do describe how you are feeling.

What actually makes more sense? Joker hobbling around the ship muttering "Oh my, the Collectors have boarded the ship. Oh my, I'm quite afraid. Dear me, they've taken Kelly and might possibly do her harm." or "Sh*t, sh*t, sh*t..."?

Psh. No polite crew member of a warship fighting against a genocidal threat talks like that when faced with a catastrophic life or death situation. Obviously what a real person would say is something along the lines of "Oh crap, oh spit, oh motherfather oh gosh dangit."

Realistic writing 101. Get with the program here.

im sorry but this is utter crap, saying your kids wont be affected by what they hear/see at home is the same as thinking that washing your car with muddy water wont scratch the paint.

can you honestly tell me that you are going to sit your 10 year old down and explain to him when NOT to use foul language???
also where do you? (and all of you for that matter) get off on telling the OP on how to raise his kids? what right do you ahve to make such a statement. im sorry but although I agree with swearing in games (where appropriate) i think you poeple are being a little too harsh, if you have anger to vent punch a damn wall. talk about being a one track mind. havent any of you ever heard of seeing both sides of the coin (and that goes for the pro and anti swearers) God sometimes these forums are a joke

It's called PARENTING.

IE. sitting your children down and telling them what's right and what's wrong.

FFS too many parents let the xbox do all of the parenting, absolutely pitiful and lazy

We need more cursing. It´s a human thing to curse the guys you´re about to hack to pieces right NOW. It is ridiculous if they don´t do it in a game.

Also, some people are just b*tches. You should be allowed to say that.

They did that in Halo ODST. Aw nuts. Really? We're about to be blown up and that's all you have to say. "Aw nuts." ? Jesus Christ...

Also @ op. If this was a "R" rated movie you wouldn't let your kid watch it. And you wouldn't blink an eye at cursing. Or nudity for that matter. But because it's a game you think it's destroying the world because Jack says **** once or twice. So learn to be a good parent, or get rid of the crypod and stop blaming other people because you ****ed up.

We aren't talking about that.  We're talking about DA GAIMEZ.

If your kid (GOD FORBID) hears a "naughty naughty" on the internet or on TV, then you sit them down and tell them it's wrong to say such FILTH.

If you yourself are cursing in the house like a sailor all the time, then I really doubt you give a **** about what your kids say or do.

Point is: don't tell some government entity, the developers, or the machines to do you goddamn parenting for you.  MAYBE TRY PRETENDING TO GIVE A **** ABOUT YOUR KIDS AND WHAT THEY DO

I actually find the terms Gosh darn it and other political correct ways to cursing way more offensive than using the real curse words. Those are used by smug people who think they are better than everybody else by not using the "bad" words. In reality they are just as bad as the rest of use because it doesn't matter what word you use when you curse, a curse is still a curse.

As for cursing in games aimed for mature audience, go for it. But do it with style like in ME2 or Fallout series.

And as for OP, you really think that showing your kids images of people being shot and burned to death while screaming in agony is OK, but having them hear a curse word is wrong and needs to be cencored? Man your kids are going to be the model citizens... Oh, but I forgot, you must be american, you don't have the little thing called common sense...
