I actually find the terms Gosh darn it and other political correct ways to cursing way more offensive than using the real curse words. Those are used by smug people who think they are better than everybody else by not using the "bad" words. In reality they are just as bad as the rest of use because it doesn't matter what word you use when you curse, a curse is still a curse.

As for cursing in games aimed for mature audience, go for it. But do it with style like in ME2 or Fallout series.

And as for OP, you really think that showing your kids images of people being shot and burned to death while screaming in agony is OK, but having them hear a curse word is wrong and needs to be cencored? Man your kids are going to be the model citizens... Oh, but I forgot, you must be american, you don't have the little thing called common sense...

Oh cultural differences....

The game is rated M, for +17. It's perfectly visible for anyone who actually bothers to look at it and not only presses the keys in a hurry to play the game.

When I buy adult content, I EXPECT to find adult content and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure *that* out.

If you don't like adult content, then don't buy it.

But the most moronic thing is to play adult content in front of your children and then blaming the company who made the game. The key words here are "ADULT", "M-MATURE" and "+17"

People may yap all they want about inappropriate language or contents, but it's them who bought a game with big warnings that say "violence" or "offensive language" - seriously, what did they expect?

In Germany  they would expect violence and strong language (or rather, the state having cut it off). In America it´s obviously different.

Some people simply are idiots.

I swear more in Real life than this puny video game...

As long as it swears about situations and not swears just to swear, it's totally fine!

If I don't get the Bus or something like that, I think (sometimes actually speak, .... and very rarely even yell) "Scheiße" ... or how a bavarian would say "Himeherrgottsakramezefixhalleluyamilecksamuarschscheißglumverrecks" (Yepp, that is ONE swear! / Gotta love german/bavarian swearing).

Here in Quebec, we might not have those long swear lines, but we can conjugate our swears at different times...Image IPB You can even replace certain verbs by swear words

The M rating does not hurt developers nor the publishers of video games...Modern Warfare 2 proves that.

Cursing is more realistic. Everyone does it. And like an earlier comment before, In the heat of a battle a soldier being shot at or that got shot is not going to say, "Oh darn he comes the enemy, get to cover you guys" or "Fudge, that crap hurt really bad." It's reality man, games are aiming for a more realistic approach and to do that you must implement cursing

Having cursing in the game to make it more realistic sounds like a pretty weak excuse to me. To me, it shows a bit of a lack of creativity. Take the TV show Firefly(best thing since sliced bread). It's set in the same general time frame and they made up a whole new set of curse words that showed how language evolves over time. Are people really still going to be dropping f-bombs in 500 years? Come on, now. Show a little creativity. In point of fact, it actually makes the game less realistic. Because it's like putting a bunch of people from our time into the future and putting them on a ship and having them save the universe. Cursing with contemporary language actually detracts from the futuristic theme. I play a game and I want to be immersed in the universe it creates, I don't want a rough conglomeration of then and now. I want it to take me away from the world, not remind me of it, that's why people play games.

I just realized, you're a stupid necro.

I HATE NECRO's

You read my post and that's your reply?  Boy, am I in the wrong place...

I swear all the time. But that is immaterial to this discussion, I just wanted to show I'm tough and edgy.

/sarcasm.

Anyway, I'd like to see anyone hang around with a bunch of marines and ask them politely not to swear.

The swearing in ME2, compared to the swearing that would likely occur in the real world equivalent of the same situations, is ****ing mild.

Of course! All M rated games should have a profanity filter, because we know that it is the ONLY aspect of M rated games we don't want kids to be exposed to.

Yep. So long as my kids don't hear the f word I'm more than happy for them to grow up on a diet of bloody violence and sex.

Perhaps they could make a special edition version in which the LI characters want to wait until marriage, and Shepard works out his differences with the collectors in a constructive manner.

Not the second part. While it would be very American and admirable not to have sex until you´re married, it would be quite unamerican, unmanly and maybe even communist propaganda NOT to shoot collectors. After all, they even LOOK like terrorrists, what with their dirty long beards and all.

For someone like me who really really wants to play ME2 but doesn't want to be made uncomfortable by the content

This just doesn't make any sense whatsoever. The cursing, the sex and the drugs are an integral part of the story, of the world Mass Effect is set in and if you took all that out, it wouldn't be the same game anymore. If you don't like these elements to be in your games, you don't really want to play Mass Effect.

And none of this has to be in every game, and guess what, it isn't. There are different types of games for different types of audiences just like in any other medium. Get a Ratchet and Clank game or something. They're excellent games, and guaranteed squeaky-clean. But some of us do enjoy games with "mature" themes, and we don't have to justify this preference just because some people are too lazy to take care of their kids.

I edited a swear word out of that last sentence, by the way.

You're probably right about all this.  And if I wanted to play Ratchet and Clank, I would.  The big problem for me and ME2 is that I got fairly well invested in ME1 and I want to see how ME2 turns out with the choices that I'd make in the game.  Somehow reading the synopsis on the Mass Effect Wiki just isn't the same as actually playing the game.  There are choices to be made in everything, one of the great things in the game (for me) is that you have a choice to not have sex, and it doesn't affect the story whatsoever, even if you do have a romance going on.  If you had a choice to not hear all the cursing in the game, then it'd be perfect for me.  Still, I'm not saying the game should be censored at all, the game is what it is and it shouldn't be changed just because I think so.  If I could figure out which characters curse, when and how often, and strategically mute my tv accordingly, I might buy the game.

Oh, and thanks for the edit, I appreciate it. *salutes*

If you're wondering why I'm so head up against cursing, I'll just say that it really annoys me.  It's not some irrational law that I abide by, it's just that I feel that a person can express themselves effectively without cursing.  It's not what you say, it's how you say it.  If I can live life without swearing like a sailor, anybody can.  I do use expletives, but my most common one is"blast", and my strongest one is usually only thought and not spoken (or typed) unless I feel strongly enough to use it (which isn't often).  And even my strongest one is fairly mild compared to the vast array of expletives in the English language.

So yeah, I just don't want people to think that I'm...whatever that guy called me.  :D

Mass Effect is supposed to be an adult game, so things like nudity, adult language, etc. are expected. Used properly they can heighten the realism of cutscenes and combat. Used poorly or excessively and they lose impact and take away from the game's believability. I think profanity was implemented well in ME2, it was much better in this regard than ME1, (Admiral Kahoku comes to mind). No one ever died from shrapnel from an F-bomb.

Since when is that American?  Last I checked every high school in the country is full of fornication.

On topic... yeah, don't play mature games around your kids.  Take them to a park or something.  If I ever have kids, that'll be the day I cut down my gaming habits to once a week, at most.

Wait, I don't think you get it, after having a heart to heart conversation with the collector general, they could decide what concerns they have in common and help people.  Perhaps they could start a charitable organization that subsidizes breeding contracts for under-priveleged Salarians.

I wasn't in the mood to explain that I know the US constitution states that the state will make no laws regarding the religious choices of the people. Looks like it backfired.

US is not, nor will it ever be a Christian Nation. It is the land of the free and that is what the first amendment is about, suck on that bible thumpers . The Us founding father implement  the FIRST amendment, so people could practice there religious beliefs with out fear of being prosecuted.

I found the profanity filter quite odd in Conker Live & Reloaded. While no swearing of any kind was allowed, it seemed like some other objectionable material was allowed.
