cursing in games

You know what I think it really is. Parent don't mind any of it at all, but kids will repeat the swear words in public and embarrass the parent. Parents don't want other people knowing what they let their kids watch and play and listen to.

Perhaps not, but it is a religious nation, the whole "One Nation Under God" thing. The concept of God is shown in several religions. So perhaps the US isn't specifically a Christian Nation, but it is a God fearing Nation. I mean "fearing" in the figurative sense.
And in such a diverse society, where the laws are generalized to apply to the greatest number of people, cursing has no law against it, or any set rules to follow regarding it, at least, not anymore. Except for the rating systems of movies, games and television.
I may not like strong language personally, but that fact has absolutely no bearing on anything whatsoever. It is a free country and I would be a hypocrite to say that swearing is wrong. But disliking it is my right, and nobody can say that disliking strong language is wrong without being a hypocrite themselves.

Great, I turned this thread into a discussion about the US Constitution. Wasn't Reagan the one who introduced the "One nation under God" during the Cold War?
Yeah, good job Deth.
I was trying to get back on track with the last part of my post though...

You can refuse to play a videogame based on the fact that you don't like the angle of the main character's eyebrows for all I care, it's really all a matter of personal preference. But if you post your opinion on an internet messageboard, people generally assume that it's to invite discussion, and since I'm as much entitled to my opinion as you are to yours, my contribution to this discussion that you have invited is that I think your priorities are seriously off if you're fine with the kind of violence that's on display in Mass Effect 2, but the use of the f-word bothers you, and I also think people like the OP who let their kids watch them play videogames that are not meant for them and then come on the developer's messageboard to complain about what they themselves have exposed their kids to should have been removed from the gene pool before they had a chance to procreate.

Oh, definitely. I did want to discuss it. And even though other people's opinions don't affect me much, I do enjoy seeing things from an alternate perspective, like yours. Not only does it help me figure myself out, but it helps me figure out how other people think as well. But I'm pretty big on trying to understand other people, where they're coming from and what their opinions are. As long as they're not insulting, I'll follow whatever discussion for however long it lasts. And you haven't insulted me, so it's all good. Unless you think that what I just said was weird and you don't want to talk to me anymore.
And again, it doesn't bother me, it annoys me. There's a difference. I don't like to be annoyed, like most people, and I won't subject myself to something annoying by choice. That's all. I misspoke before when I said that it made me uncomfortable, I don't just sit there and say "they shouldn't have said that." It's more like wanting to swat at a mosquito, if you follow me.

Absolutely true. After watching a Frontline documentary following troops in Afghanistan, I figured Bio'd couldn't possibly be realistic with the amount of cursing in the game. They wouldn't be able to play any clips of the game on TV if they did. Although I guess they could bleep the hell out of them.

wah...wah....wah....If you don't want to hear it don't buy the game....Be a parent and police your children's game playing.....etc....
Why do publishers(or on another note, movies but I digress} feel the need to incorporate such a exorbinant amount of cursing into a game.
That said, I love this type of games(for the matter all types of games). I like to become part of the story, to feel like I make a difference in the story to some extent. And I do not mind the language in games for me, myself, or I.
I have children that like playing the same type of games I do, that like to watch while I play. My spouse does not like this type of language and while we can not police what they hear outside of our house, we can try to regulate in our house.
I do play games with cursing in them but have to play around my children's viewing. I know all the arguments...there are no bad words just bad meaning...etc. But tell that to my children or your children when they get suspended from school or whatever. Like it or not certain words hold certain status in our society. On Network TV and Radio they more or less hold to a certain standard, though that is changing every year. My point is can publishers put in filters to allow people to enjoy the game with out the cursing or what ever else? An appropiate Beep just like they do on TV or a fade to black for WHAT EVER ELSE.(see other threads for that can of worms) Something a person can set to change the game to allow their children or themselves play with out the cursing (OR WHATEVER ELSE). If a filter could be worked in more people could enjoy them. I honestly think there are a large amount of people that would buy certain games if this type of filter were installed. The Big M on a box does affect a publisher's profit margin . I know there are hard core gamers that will disagree but I bet there are a lot that will agree with me.
The field is now open and as I said let the insults begin.....
Because cursing is common in real life. And it's your choice to shell out money to buy a game plastered with warnings about the content that you might find offensive. TV censorship is a result of irresponsible parents who want to coddle and shelter their children from reality without having to be there to do the coddling in person, instead preferring that the government do the censoring for them. It's a great thing that games are full of cussing, violence and content that offends uptight parents and concerned citizens. If you don't want kids to hear cussing in a game, don't play it while they're around.
Games are made to generate money, it would be a waste of money to cater to a tiny subset of the market that can't stomach bad words in a game full of killing and violence.

What kind of a game is Bayonetta anyway? Personally hack and slash games bore me to death.spacehamsterZH wrote...
A large part of why I refuse to play Bayonetta is the visual style. It has nothing to do with the gameplay. The fact that there are butterflies coming out of her feet everytime she jumps just makes me want to claw my eyes out. As far as that goes, I can see where you're coming from. It's just an aesthetic that I find incredibly irritating, so I stay away from it.

Yeah, exactly. It's not a morals thing with me. Most violence is just fine with me, I love playing the Halo trilogy, it's just fun, dying every other second not so much, but I usually set it to easy anyway. *shrug* KotOR is also one of my favorite games and cutting baddies up with a lightsaber is good clean fun in my humble opinion. Same with The Force Unleashed. But I'm a huge Star Wars fan so...
Back to the thread.
Cursing in games is just fine as long as it's labeled such, which most are. People should use discretion if something is questionably approriate in certain situations. Like the phrase "Viewer Discretion Advised", sometimes, it's best to just change the channel. There you have it.
And I didn't cuss once.

It's a pure action game. You'd probably hate it. I'm a big fan of the God of War series myself, so I figured I'd give it a shot, but I couldn't even make it to the end of the demo, it was so annoying.

Rated M for Mature. Includes Blood, Drug Reference, Sexual Content, Strong Language, and Violence.
Right off the box. At least the US version

Exactly. It's on the box, so people have the choice to buy or not buy, play around kids or not play around kids. It's totally up to the individual and what choices they make.

You didn't read my other post. It was added by vote in the US Congress. If the US Congress doesn't represent the people of the United States, who does?
But that's off topic.
And you don't have to go around assuming people are stupid. It hurts their feelings. But thanks for forgiving me nonetheless.

Yep. If you want your children to know how to act in society, you should teach them how to act. You should prepare them as best you can for when they go out into the world and make a life for themselves. If that includes the proper use of language, so be it. You are your child's best hope for future success in life, best get them prepared for everything out there.
