From level 5 on is much easier than New Game+, because on NG+ you start with no upgrades and you are level 30 so enemies have the best gear, most health, defenses etc right from the start, after you get some of the upgrades back it slides back to regular Insanity.

Also, even if you start a completely new character, you still get the benefit of the extra 200,000 credits and 50,000 of each element to start off with for beating the game, so you've got a bit of a let-up that can speed the beginning of the game along a bit.

I've got Geth Shield (after many attempts, I determined I needed this as a way to buy time in combat) as my bonus power. I've maxed it as well as Concussive Shot, my soldier skill and Adrenaline Boost. I've picked Zaeed and Grunt as my teammates, and if they don't get themselves killed, they help a lot, but either by upgrade limit or how much I use Medi-Gel, I only have 4 does to use in this mission, so I have to be careful of when I use it. I went with the Widowmaker sniper rifle, and this has produced the best results so far, but I still can't last long enough to get through this mission. Zaeed is loyal. Grunt is not.
I find if I move about (difficult as there aren't a lot of places of cover), I can keep my squad behind cover which helps them last longer (I'm the bullet magnet of the group). This is a give and take strategy as sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. If I'm not desperate for the added shielding, I initiate Adrenaline Boost and get at least one good shot at my selected target. If my squad mates are still alive, I use Concussive Shot (theirs, not mine) to take down Collector drones so I have fewer people firing at me.
I'm so frustrated at this point. My thought is to "roll back" my game to a prior save, try and get Grunt and Mordin loyal (I think both missions are available), so that Grunt has both Krogan Vitality upgrades before this mission. I've heard that Lawson would be someone I should include, but her Cerberus skill isn't maxed, so I'd have to go far enough back that she has the spare points to devote to that...which might not be possible.
However, so far, each barrier I've hit came down to a combination of figuring out the right strategy for getting past the bad guys (location and knowing which guy to kill to stop the spawning of more bad guys). It was never about the right skills or teammates.
Any help from those playing a soldier would really be appreciated.

Best advice, don't stick with one build. You know what to expect, use your retrain powers and advanced training and take skills that will be useful in that mission. You only need 29, 500 element zero and you start with 50k. It makes absolutely no sense to carry a dead skill (like disruptor ammo on collector missions, or warp ammo on blue suns missions') when you can retrain and have all your skills useful.

if you dont wna switch powers, then bring a loyal jack for squad warp ammo, the difference it makes having this ammo power against collectors is big.

@zer0netgain, you should bring miranda and thane for collectors really, max out warp as hvy warp and they one shot collector barriers, a loyal samara with max area reave is also good. if you definitely want the widow then ok, but the revenant wtfpwns everything. also, its worth picking up warp ammo for collector missions and dropping GSB, gives you an ammo type effective against these enemies, afterwards you can switch back to GSB if you like(you're using the 10% dmg version right?)

Thanks for the tips.
What bites is that I've developed most all my squad mates to an extent, and you can't change assigned skill points for them if you want to boost a different skill for a given mission. Thane isn't an option here because the mission has been triggered and I had not yet recruited him.
Someone linked me to a YouTube vid that pointed out that a key to beating this point on Insanity focuses on where you place your squad mates. I'm going to try it tonight, and it makes sense. I had everyone huddled behind one barrier, and we died like dogs. I got better results if I moved to another place (for them) but it was happenstance if I got better results. Eventually they'd get taken out and I'd die.
The vid showed that you must assign your team mates to take cover with one on the left and one on the right ahead of you at the edge of the platform you start on. You stay behind cover in the center of the platform. This denies the bad guys a common place to aim at (giving your squad mates time to regen their heath and shields) and while you're still a bullet magnet, your squad mates help you take the bad guys down before anyone can get close enough to lay too much fire on you.
Here's hopig it works.

even when i vanish (im an infiltrator) to try and give myself some distance its no good i get 1 or 2 down and got 5 more after me. noticed too that they always go straight for me even when grunt or any of the others are right next to them
have to say tho i do miss the broader range of abilities in ME1. loved my adept on insanity. not a fan of ME2's global cooldown for all abilites if u use only 1.

Believe it or not, I did it with the ME1 import Soldier I originally had problems with on this mission. Maxed Adrenaline Rush (Hardened), soldier skill (Commando), level 3 on Adrenaline Rush, Inferno Ammo and Geth Shield Boost. Took the Revenant Machine Gun, and once I got the hang of it, I could see how it dealt more effective damage. Went with Wrex and Miranda.
It was as much skill as dumb luck. You gotta take out that first platform of Collectors and hopefully get the first Scion down to dead before the next wave shows up or you get hit on all sides. Pull that off and you have a chance of picking off the rest as they try to close in for better shots.
