So....

We should just be playing shooters, platformers, fighting, and racing games? With no concern for the story or characters?

No thank you.

what make a better game for GAMERS, that is people who enjoy playing games. A game that is enjoyable has great gameplay, or a game who has repetative gameplay, and a fantasic story.

Personaly i rather play a fun game then an interactive movie, story is great, but not when it sacrafices gameplay

seriosuly go buy a Wii and get Metroid trilogy, there is a story there, however it does not present itself like a mushroom stamp to the forhead, and the gameplay is fantastic.

You are far more brave than I to even go exploring. I was baffled there were Yahtzee impersonators out there, but there's no way I'm going to seek them out now that I know.

I was with you up until you said "go buy a Wii". You'll have to excuse my elderly self if I have trouble taking you seriously.

people constantly crap on the Wii, yet it makes more money then PS3 and Xbox 360 combined, and the reason for it is they focus on gameplay more then lighting effects.

the MOST important part of a game is GAMEPLAY, as soon as the major game makers remember that then games will not 8 hours long and play like crap, but look great.

Fun game > good looking game

also the nintendo DS makes more money then both PS3 and Xbox 360

there is a reason for it, you scoff at it but the market says you are the ******

I have to laugh though. People DO constantly slam the Wii over the Xbox 360 and PS3 and don't realize that Microsoft and Sony want to be in Nintendo's position.

Oh, yeah, I'm all with you on that one. There's been all sorts of really great hybrid games and it's really hard to be innovative when all games invariably are rehashes of something that has already been done.

What I didn't understand though, was your comment on how we should play a greater variety of games (I play lots and lots of games, especially when I was younger) and how that correlate to what developers are doing. As much as I'd like to, I don't have any influence over what developers are into.

As long as the vast majority settles for less, they will strive to produce the most profitable game with the least amount of effort. Thus FIFA 2032 is born. There is nothing inherently shameful in that, but I don't have to like it.

Really? I thought the Wii was making money hand over fist for appealing to the casual gamer crowd and bringing in a larger market that previous developers ignored because they found games too complicated or difficult to pick up.

I don't think it's innovation or gameplay that draws the crowd, but the lovely gimmick they've turned it into. It's more a curiosity than a gaming platform.

they are getting more gamers becasue they are making gameplay the top priority, they make games fun to play. Games can be hard but have great gameplay and it will bring people in. honestly what better for a shooter, pointing at what you want to hit, or using an anolog stick?? if you ever played a shooter on Wii you would laugh at the idiocy of XBox shooters

and a game does not have to be hard to have great gameplay, its simply got to be fun and REPLAYABLE, i do not know if you payed any attention to E3 but both PS3 and XBox 360 are trying to make motion control systems now simply becasue Wii kicked their asses in the money making departments.

Can you pea sized brain even understand that game play is the most important part of gaming, Nintendo does and it takes that understanding to the bank

on the linearity...isn't a story by definition linear?

BioWare's strategy does well it's a classic hero's tale and they're good enough at putting enough twists in there to keep people happy, they've also opened it up so that you can complete the story in whatever order you want mostly.

If you want open world you're going to have to accept a much less in depth story, Bethesda's open-world games are the most prime examples of this. As someone else said, your character in a BioWare game is someone with personality and real 'character' to them, your character in a Bethesda game is more akin to an avatar a skin you wear in the game world, it doesn't have any personality or character of it's own.

Not that I have anything against Bethesda's open-world games, they're great fun but not nearly as gripping as a BioWare story-driven game.

Also people crap on Wow, yes its a horribly flawed game, but with 11 million people paying 15 bucks a month to play it, they must do something right. WoW brings in 164 million dollars a month, that more money then ME2 will make in its lifetime

You do have influence over what developers are into, just not as much as the Gears of War fans, and Modern Warfare, etc..

Profitability lies in accessibility, and action oriented titles with shallow stories and easygameplay are much more accessible.

They are attracting the non-gamer with their console.  Making it so accessible that even 80 year olds and stay at home moms can play with little trouble.  That is why they are so successful, they opened up a new market audience that goes beyond the "gamer."

Are you toting the Wii as the platform for SHOOTERS?  lol, maybe the 1-2 first-party (Metroid) FPS are good, but for the most part Shooters are the worst games on the Wii (rail-shooters are pretty fun though, in an arcadey way).

Actually, they're not. The detection of the Wii remote is atrocious and does not have the fine sensitivity you can get with something like... say, a mouse. Now, I haven't tried the new Wii + or whatever their new add-on for the controller is that's suppose to make the Wii remote actually detect finer movement (which is what the damn thing was suppose to do at launch but now requires $40 extra).

I tried Red Steel, it does not mimic sword fighting in the least. Wii Resort? About as smooth as playing in maple syrup, and just as responsive.

I did notice. Makes me sad that these companies are focusing so much attention on a market that really isn't that savvy when it comes to the medium. Mercifully, developers are free from publishers, so I don't have to worry about Mass Effect with a Wiiwand or Dragon Age and the new Wiield and Wiord attachments.

Can you pea sized brain even understand that game play is the most important part of gaming, Nintendo does and it takes that understanding to the bank

Nintendo isn't marketing gameplay, they're marketing a gimmick. Good, balanced gameplay can be found in things that don't involved waving some silly hunk of plastic at a small sensor on your screen. Team Fortess 2 has excellent gameplay, Left 4 Dead is a far better shooter than anything on that console. A lot of the best games on the Wii don't even utilize the wiimote that much (or, in Brawl's case, not at all).

you can continue to dump on them but Bilzzard will keep laughing at you all the way to the bank

its funny how single people think they are the ones who are enlightend when, yet they ignore what real. Personaly i do not like wow anymore they changed the game too much, but that does not change the fact that its the most played game in the world right now. You dump on the Wii, but yet more people own Wiis then PS3 and Xbos combined, and its not becasue of "stupid" people as you say, it becasue they want GAMEPLAY, not CoD4 clones every 3 months.

Gameplay needs to be the focus of a game, not story, not charater development, but GAMEPLAY. The other things are fantastic in games, but they can never trup how the game plays, no matter how great the story is if the game is a turd to play its a turd game.
